Joel Matip underwent a scan on Saturday after complaining of discomfort in a leg muscle after the derby. Nothing major but will continue to be assessed ahead of Ajax away in the CL on Wednesday night. #LFC
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Typical he's played his one contractual game a month
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think any knocks to Gomez or Matip, they should sit on the bench. Play Fabinho. We can't risk a long injury to either of them.
For a title challenging side we really are paper thin in central defence.
Think we need to move Fab there permanently for the season as Matip's fitness nor Gomez's performances are reliable.
Simply must sign a CB in January.

Yeah, Matip is going to have to be a 1 game a week player. We are lucky our CL is draw is easy enough that we can play Fab and Gomez. Our hardest game is on Weds and then it should be plain sailing.

Sorry thought we were plating Atalanta
I always said I thought it was a bit naïve really to not go and sign a CB. I can understand selling Lovren as he probably wanted to leave anyway, so it wasn't much of a loss that and better cover maybe could have been signed than Lovren anyway who we all knew had an error in and besides, it's nice to freshen up the squad as well.
Somebody like Upamecano from Leipzig is probably unlikely to join knowing that he wouldn't be promised a regular starter (much like Werner) even though I believe someone of his quality and calibre would probably start and push both Gomez and Matip down the pecking order.
Failing that, I like the look of Jerome Onguene from Salzburg who I believe possibly would have joined Liverpool, especially knowing there may have been a chance of playing games considering Matip and Gomez and both unreliable and/or prone to injuries and any injury to Van Djik, which has now happened, would leave them essentially first choice for a considerable amount of time.
Unfortunately I think that's one decision the club has got wrong this summer.

I think that CB is slightly different to the forward line. Someone like Werner is good enough to start at almost any club but displacing one of our front 3 is incredibly challenging not only because of individual performance but also chemistry.
Personally I think any top CB would look at our team and think that a place is up for grabs. Not easy to do (I still really rate Gomez irrespective of form) but you wouldn't expect it to be easy to get into a title/CL challenging team.
I think any top CB would look at us and think they could be VVDs partner for 5 years. I'm just not sure who the top CBs are and whether they're readily available. A lot of big sides could do with a CB.
Just saw that Pickford will face no further action.

We should have signed a new center back with the injury history of Matip and Gomez.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
i said this ages ago, although wasnt fussed at all Lovren went still highlighted this. Fabinho will be playing CB a lot.
Just gotta pray VVD recovers well acl injuries you never trust your knee again prob lose some pace etc and have knee problems now. Was hoping he'd play well into his 30s. Gomez is somehow going backwards. Think we will have to stop with this high line offside crap without vvs n alisson now surely. All out for that upcamembertbob guy in jan?
lost huge goal threat in vvd too, none of our other cbs are much of a threat, even 7 foot matips got a pea head.
only one thing for it, step forward koumetio

Yeah I agree the Werner situation would be different to a CB joining the club, I meant just in principle. I don't think there was any intention of improving the CB position in the summer otherwise it would have happened, even though it very well could be one of the areas you look at and think "we could use somebody better there", I think most Liverpool fans would agree on that.
I think the priority was obviously cover at LB, in the front 3 and signing Thiago, I just think a bit of a naïve mistake was juggling the risk of the lack of depth at CB, one which hasn't worked in Liverpool's favour it seems now.
Kouliably would have probably joined but obviously his fee was astronomical which Liverpool wouldn't have been able to afford.

I guess CB would have been the next highest priority but the club could only do so much.
Agree to an extent. I was expecting Minamino to adapt to the speed of this league and tbh I thought cover for the front 3 would have been signed with Shaqiri leaving although that hasn't happened, that was my look on things anyway.
Either way, a CB is definitely the next position on the agenda.

It's a complete farce, really don't see the point in having a referee, VAR or even a governing body of they aren't going to punish somebody for a potentially career ending challenge.
Wouldn't say this outside this board but that's worse than biting for me. No intention to do anything other than harm VVD.

It's not the first time that retrospective action has been avoided because a ref has seen it and decided not to take action and it won't be the last.
That general stance should be questioned though; I get that they don't want to re-ref the game or undermine a ref but for issues like violent conduct a review is not unreasonable. That's ultimately what VAR is and arguably if VAR works then a review shouldn't be necessary. However, I think we've seen many times over the last year or so, VAR decisions are far from perfect.
Pickford is a hero now to the rivals whether we like it or not. They all said take VVD out of our side and you will see the cracks.
