The UK has a gambling and alcohol addiction problem. I think it's your culture of promoting those things.
I love a bet on the horses (really enjoy going to meetings too, particularly in the summer) and sometimes betting on the football as a recreational thing to make it more enjoyable to watch but that's it really.
Casino, slot machines or the betting shop machines isn't something I've ever understood though. It's set up to take money off from you in the long run, even if you get lucky initially. So the more you play the more the odds align and you are bound to up losing in the long run.
I do understand that the addiction comes from more the "thrill of the winning feeling" rather than genuinely thinking you can make money from it, and recognise it destroys lives and families.
Totally agree with whoever mentioned the £2 limit on those machines being one of the best things that has happened under this government, just wish it had come in sooner. The real addicts will probably find another way unfortunately but perhaps having to find that way around might give them a bit more time to get their head right rather than panicking and hitting the button straight away.

I have lived in my early twenties in France and Spain for work but never seen there the same amount of addiction to alcohol and gambling as the UK. Maybe the weather or the quality of life in those Latin countries is the reason why there is less addiction to it.
