Klopp did very well with the subs and timing of them, doesn't always get it right but I've criticised when he doesn't so he equally deserves the praise when he does.

Keita deservedly be hooked at half time and he saw that, it needed to happen. He was a liability defensively and we couldn't continue with those spaces in the second half. Fab gave us more control.

Correct decisions to take Milner and Trent (had a really poor second half) off when they were booked as any kind of foul and they were going to be sent off. Ox was good and Gomez helped solidify things when we were under pressure at the end.

Definitely feel it was the difference between a 2-3 and a 3-3.

Klopp knows that Fabinho has to play against top teams.

Personally I think yesterday will be a good lesson in adaptability and responding to the emerging game. We just didn't do that imo.

The psychology of the team appear to be go for the throat and they had such success so quickly that if defined our performance for the remaining 30 mins of the first half. The press and line was so high, we didn't learn lessons from what AM were trying to do. They weren't passing through us, they were releasing runners quickly. There wasn't any attempt to negate that tactic which was the really disappointing thing. I know we attempt to impose our game on others but it can't be at the cost of failing to respond the the opponents game-plan.

Keita will attract the most criticisms because he was beaten for the goals but he wasn't alone in making errors and being beaten by his man. And for me, criticising one individual kind of missing the point of a team response anyway.

Ultimately we played a good side away from home, we didn't play well and didn't adapt to their tactics but got the 3 points. You can only be so disappointed with a victory away to the Spanish champions when they played pretty well.

Ultimately there will always be a weakness in the side, that obviously is the ball over the top of the defence because of how high the line is. But it's a small price to pay rather than being completely exposed by dropping deeper and having big gaping holes open up in the midfield. Considering the midfielders who play either side of Fabinho (normally) regularly cover the full backs going forward, dropping deeper just opens up a huge gap in the middle of the park.

It's a weakness that seems to be getting exposed more and you can't defend with your defence in the opposition's half, but I think Klopp knows that the opposition will be more scared of what the team can do in an attacking sense than what they'd do to hurt the defence. Obviously, against better sides like Atletico, they'll be capable of exposing the team.

I love how whenever we concede there has to be a scapegoat

We score: our attackers are wonderful

Best team in Spain scores: keita is rammal, (except his two amazing ranged goals this season, offering a dimension we sorely lack)

They are the best team in Spain, unbeaten at home in Europe for God knows how long, with an extremely capable manager, who has bested all the top names tactically.

We have known keita is weak defensively for years, he's going to operate best in a midfield with plenty of shielding, and that's when we see his best work, buy this nonsense of pinpointing someone to blame for every goal we concede is reductive nonsense, why not blame whoever have away the ball? Why not blame the defence whose job is to shield the goal? Why not Alisson for stopping the shot?

Atletico have some VERY capable players. We won a really tight game, the hardest in the group and have a lovely lead, whilst atelti will lose Griezemann for the rest of the group stage.

It went perfectly last night, we won, why the hell do we need to scapegoat people for what was a tactical mistake by klopp (that he corrected) they responded to our first 20, and second half we responded to their superiority in the rest of the half, it was a tense and enjoyable game, we don't need scapegoats, both teams have wonderful attacks.

Why should we waste time focusing on the opposition defensive mistakes

posted on 20/10/21

Our tactic to press narrow with the front wide players gives the opposition space to overload the wide areas.
There were too many times when Salah and Mane moved infield to press. I think this was done to block the passing lines to the centre zone because Atletico plays more from those areas in the pitch. The balance of the midfield was good but when players lose their battles in midfield it becomes very difficult for the defenders.

I think it's better for the wide players to position themselves more between the oppositions center back and fullback. Maybe they have changed the pressing tactic to get the wide players more closer to goal in case we win the ball back.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Because sometimes they aren't mistakes, for our goals the praise always goes to the attackers and their movement.

Never when it's the opposition though, it's incredibly blinkered and leads to idiots savaging our own players needlessly.

We beat the best team in Spain, without playing our strongest side. We should be feckin happy, not trying to find someone to pin the blame for their goals on.

It's reductive

Yeah, the champions of Spain are always going to cause us issues at their place. They have some very good offensive players and we are slightly more open this season than we have been the last two seasons, so it isn't a shock that they got at us. I wouldn't be surprised if they came away with at least a draw at Anfield because they're a very good team and Simeone is tactically excellent. Some times you just have to hold your hands up and acknowledge that a team will always cause problems in the same way we do to most teams.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank God there are some out there that actually get it. I find it insane that some people find it impossible to acknowledge that other teams can be good at football except your own. They were extremely dangerous on the break and put us under plenty of pressure, and it’s almost inevitable that they’ll get through us at some point.

Yeah, Fab and Thiago would almost certainly be in most people’s first choice midfield. Neither started and midfield was our problem area, so I think it’s fair to say we had a weakened side out.

He was supposed to be our most advanced midfielder,
-----
And rewarded us with a goal. He's also supposed to get back to cover the defence? What's the job of the other players?

The change was made in Hendo's position as the back four wasn't being protected enough. We needed Fabinho in there and since Keita would have been subbed off in the second half anyway then he was the obvious choice.

Its beyond doubt that Keita is now an escape goat.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No one else notice that Keita has now without doubt an escape goat

The image made me laugh anyway

Klopps choice not to start Fab yesterday. Atletico themselves opted not to start with Suarez and Correa who are first choice forwards.

I think you are confusing yourself here. IRU said we didnt play our strongest side and neither did Atletico so it was a mute point as per usual from him.
