So he is getting 1 billion pound a week then.

He's on a shed load of cash, as we all knew. At least it stops people second guessing what he's on now. The agent has cleared it up.

Happy Birthday Wayne!

Rooney’s new deal means that, every time [Man United] pitches the likes of Aeroflot, Chevrolet, Epson, DHL, or Aon for a team deal, it can dangle a personal endorsement opportunity with Rooney alongside it.
--------------------------------------

what does this exactly mean?

when the club sign a new sponsorship deal, part of it goes to rooney's pocket?

Good for Rooney I guess, must admit I never really get why he is considered a good marketing tool, he's bald, ugly, hasn't got the greatest physique and has zero charisma or personality. I get that the common man is supposed to relate but they can't really can they and when was the last time a bald fat guy was popular?

Arab,

To be honest he hasn't cleared anything up at all. He has not told us exactly what Rooney is on in tier one.

Everytime an Aeroflot plane is used, a Chevrolet car is driven, an Epson ink cartridge is bought, and someone uses Aon for their finances, Rooney gets a big wad of cash.

Pretty obvious to me.

Rooney may have good attributes as a footballer but he's very unmarketable as a person.

When I see him on these adverts with the likes of Messi and Ronaldo I cringe. He has zero charisma as mentioned above. He says 'erm' in between most words and isn't the best aesthetically is he?

Was he a world wide marketing tool, not really. Outside of England and Rome for a couple years he wasn't particularly big was he.

I can see the appeal of Rooney to fat pasty white yobs in England but I just can't see how a kid in Africa, Asia, South America etc relates or likes him.

Well considering he is a footballer, that will expalin why his name sells products.

Thanks for clearing that up Metro.

Obviously Rooney does make his sponsors money, I'm just intrigued how? I know you don't necessarily need a good product for people in marketing to be able to make suckers believe the hype and sell well. Just surprises me they are able to do with Rooney for so long.

It's maybe his explosive style of play that companies love to use for their Adverts/campaigns. That whole image is what they use for him.

Well, yes he was. Over here in the USA for starters he was better known than Ronaldo was. Since Ronaldo went to Madrid that has changed, of course.

But when you talk 'soccer' with Americans, Rooneys name always crops up.

True - it wasn't a global marketing game back then.

With kids in 'Africa, Asia, South America etc' I think they just wear Rooney shirts and scream his name thinking it is a nickname for Manchester United rather than the player himself.

I'm still missing what is ground breaking to be honest or what the difference to Rooney or the club actually is as there is so much not in the public domain (what tier one is, how the image rights worked before etc.).

I was talking about Gazza, which is why I mentioned Rome.

There's a bunch of kids who play football outside my place and they are always shouting out names of they wanna be, always Arsenal players, Messi, Ronaldo, SUarez, Ibra, never Rooney though.

This is probaly more to do with a dislike of Rooney than anything else.

Have you ever met Rooney? Ever talked to him?

I think the point is that the powers that be could replace Rooney with Phil Jones in those Coke, Nike adverts and drop shirts with his name into the desert and it would be gobbled up.

They're all terrible which is why it was interesting to hear what names they were shouting as they seem to like football more for the glamour and names than the actual sport.

Homer Simpson?

No, but I've had friends who have directed Nike commercials and photographed him as well as a bunch of other players and they have all said he's even more boring in real life than you would think. They all said he was nice, not a diva or anything, just devoid of anything going on in his brain.
