Are all promotions created equal?

So how many times have you had that promotion buzz and how does this one compare to previous seasons?

I've got all of yours plus the promotion as champions from the old second division in 76/77 and I vaguely remember the promotion from the second division in 66/67.

I "best" remember the 76/77 promotions as I went to all the matches home and away with the exception of Millwall away which was on either Boxing day or New Years day. My mate came 'round for me as arranged so that we could get a coach to London. Unfortunately he found my house in darkness as I had overslept due to too much beer the night before. Well it was the "festive season". Getting no answer from knocking the door, he resourcefully, threw a few pebbles against my bedroom window which I eventually heard before the glass broke. Cummon, he said, we'll miss the coach. Pizz orf, I said, I ain't going and I went back to bed.

We drew that game 1-1 and went on to win the division from Chelsea and Forest with whom we'd had various bouts of aggression throughout the season.
But for alcohol induced "tiredness" I'd have had a full card of matches that season.

As you say it's probably a lot to do with your own age but top for me is 1967. How could it not be with Peter Knowles dazzling everyone, Doogs unbelievable debut hat trick, and what must have been around 25,000 Wolves fans away at Coventry, all gates closed at ten past one !

Same 76/77 season, we played Hereford on a Saturday near the start of the season and we beat them 6-1 at Edgar Street. The following Tuesday we played at Southampton at the old Dell. Mick Channon "tore us a new one" that night when Saints beat us 6-2. What a miserable night! Halfway across the world to see us get hammered. Promotion was far from a certainty at that point. Luckily we improved and went up on merit being the best side in the division.

All promotions are great in their own way. The play off final win was a great day after a season that was pretty up and down. The McCarthy promotion was the most exciting over a season due to the goals and exciting wing play. This last season was more expected but achieved with some style. The one from my younger days that sticks out, and I can't recall the year, was the season we signed the Doog. Don't know how many times we scored 4 at home that season but it seemed a lot and the Doog brought in a whole new generation of wolves fans just as Bully was to do some years later.

I was at that Hereford game Cyp, the old 'uns here still talk about that it when Wolves fans took the town apart, not just the team !

I just about remember Sammy Chungs 1977 Div 2 champions, mainly because of the the rivalry with my older cousin who is a Chelsea fan. Had some proper ding dongs with them that season, both draws I think.

I honestly rank last seasons promotion as one of the most enjoyable, depite having broken all those records, we were pushed pretty much to the wire.

Most of the promotions have been as champions in my era, Ive never seen us go up automatically in second or third place, so although Cardiff was great, (I couldnt get a ticket so had to watch it in the box), Id say 08/09 gave me the biggest buzz.

Was some trouble, Wolfgang.

I went to the game on the train from Wolvo. There was fighting on the train even before we got anywhere near Hereford, it seemed between Wolves fans. It transpired that there were a number of undercover police on the train that had been recognised by some of the Wolves fans. Got quite ugly!
I seem to remember that most of the pubs in and around the ground were closed for obvious reasons. Didn't seem to quell the drinking though.

The great, unique Doog

Cyp, I remember reading the E&S report after that 6-2 hammering, incredulous that we'd been stuffed by a team called S'oton, that I'd never hear of.

I was only 9.

I knew the landlord in one of the pubs closest to the ground so me and four mates got served. It was ok until we left when 40 or 50 Wolves fans thinking we were Hereford went for us !

Terrible night, Oldgold.

Mick Channon (I'm sure you must have heard of him - went on to be a successful horse racing trainer) was in his pomp at the time. Ran the whole game and scored a couple. Just to rub salt into the wound, Jim McCalliog who used to play for Wolves also scored against us.

It was a long journey back to Wolverhampton.

No one remembers 23/24 or 31/32 then? Not even you Wolfgang?

Great video Wolfgang. Dont think anyone that was there will ever forget that third goal of the Doog. A hero was born. If Messi gets one like that in the World Cup it will probably be hailed as one of the greatest goals ever

That debut is one of the great moments that stick in my memory DJ, along with Peter Knowles sitting on the ball and Bullys 4 at Newcastle.

This is what I posted a few weeks back, world war 3 ensued, at a guess I think Bute is gonna wade into you pretty soon tats, be careful

Regarding best/significant promotions, i have seen five.

Hard to separate the back to backs under turner but undoubtedly the most significant for Wolves as a club, so they would be number one.

Followed by Dave Jones, finally reaching the big time which had become an obsession to many including sir jack.

Then not much between micks and kennys, one done in fine style with a young squad, the other done in a similar vein after a truly shocking 2 years when the club was dead on its feet.

I know it came up in conversation Cinci and I said I’d get round to doing a thread on it. I don’t remember the hostilities breaking out but you and Bute are at it all the time so a lot of it just goes over my head now

Think I was an idiot and mocked for several hours for suggesting the Jones promotion meant more than the mick one

All came down to significance for me, which ones were landmark moments in the clubs history, the back to backs when it looked like we wouldn't even have a club anymore and then the Jones one after year on year of promises and near misses will always rank higher than the ones where we just dominated a season in my book.

08/09 was a more enjoyable season than 02/03 and we played better football but the 02/03 play off final was one of the best days of all time and the pleasure at seeing Wolves(P) was greater in 02/03 than in 08/09.

Yep, more wins is always more enjoyable.

Every Wolves fan alive will remember that day in Cardiff and the weight being lifted and despite being 3 up still wondering how it was all going to cave in around us.

I asked during that thread which game won us promotion in 08/09, we couldn't remember and had to go and look.

I have only know three promotions. For me they go in chronological order, like you said Tatts.

Promotion under Jones is top because it brought top flight football to Molineux for the first time in my existence, a day out at the Millenium Stadium and the first time I was allowed by my father to have a beer at the football.

Winning the Championship with Mick comes a close second. We played exciting attacking football and won the league.

This season, although we won the league and broke records, I expected promotion and would have been disappointed with anything less.

am I wrong to point out a complete contradiction in those two observations?

No, I saw it as well and wondered.
