Even when working your way back to fitness your touch and basics should still be top notch

Tonight Rooney couldn't seem to control the ball and his passing was awful. Even on a bad day these basics should be nearly 100% without question. There was one pass he took 5 yards to control. At his level in the game that just isn't good enough. On his bad days he should be as good or better than 'lesser' players. Consistently he isn't.

He then has a decent game or a moment or 2 and everyone gets excited and he starts to believe his own press. It's ridiculous

Not one England player* came out of that looking good. So why lambast Rooney in particular?

*except, annoyingly, Hart.

Rooney is expected to be a cut above the other players. He's been given that status and believes it of himself "the big man is here"

He has to justify it each time he puts on a shirt. Not been able to control the football or make simple passes is not acceptable.

There is always some nonsense with Rooney when it comes to tournaments. He's never justified the hype and the sheer indulgence he's had from England managers & colleagues

Put him in a team filled with posters from Ja and he won't perform. Football's a team game, if the rest around him don't perform (as in, what happened tonight), then he can't be expected to play to his highest standard.

MC park,I am not lambasting rooney at all. I am simply saying from what I have seen from him over the last two seasons I don't expect him to light up matches anymore because it doesn't really happen. Trust me, i don't change my views from one match

He will get good again...for sure. And you have a right to bash MY MAN.... everyone else does.

Don't expect him to win games on his own every week but he must be able to pass the ball well and control the ball every single time he sets foot on the pitch

Well I for one AM lambasting rooney . Terrible attitude, ridiculously over paid and over rated. The Media, the FA, advertisers etc have all been part of this silliness for years, trying to invent a super star to sell shirts, tickets, magazines, boots, wall clocks and whatever else they can fit his 'face' onto. Genuine football fans dont fall for it, the easily led do. Discuss.

Even when Wayne is off-the-boil he is still capable of a little bit of magic, he is not the Wayne of old but he is still a class act and Englands best option for his position.

World class? I'd say so, I think Wayne could walk into any team in any country and have a positive effect.

Ironically Rooney has better scoring record for club and country than Aguero and Suarez.

Not many friendly goals, and thats what counts.

You'll find most international strikers score against the teams they are put up against

No... Match fitness/sharpness is all about touch, getting your passing sharp, movement etc

It has little to do with actual fitness levels, which will be sky high

Do you practice being an idiot ? Or does it come naturally ?

You can only score against who you play against.

I'm sorry but an injury does not prevent someone having a good 'touch'

The 'touch' and ability to pass & control the ball is the very thing that shouldn't disappear. Rooney's touch at times is utterly appalling
