I'm affraid to say that I think this is the beginning of the end for Gerrard. I really hope not, but this groin injury will mean he won't see a full season again and recovery time will only extend as he heads towards retirement :o(
Hes supposed to be about three weeks away from playing but I dont see Kenny rushing him back.

Wow, what a strange statement. Gerrard is only 31. He has a few more years in him yet. I expect Gerrard to play for another five years at least. His ability isn't about pace. He has an a great overall game which should enable him to play for a few more years yet.
Gerrard has always had this groin injury and has struggled with it since he was a teenager but that hasn't stopped him being a great player, so I don't see how it would now.
capello said 3 weeks is what gerrard told him yesterday
No, no, no. You misunderstand. I'm not saying the injury will stop him being a great player, I'm saying it will stop him being a player full stop.
How many games was he fit for last season? 20? Maybe a little less? Thats only half a season. As you already point out he has always had trouble with groin injuries, the problem now is the increasing frequency and rehabilitation time has his groin gets older and more prone. I do agree, he has "a few more years in him yet" I just hope he has more time on the pitch than the treatment table in the 'few' years he does have left.
The thing is, about this time last year I was dreading the days when Gerrard would be injured and, eventually, retire. But now we've got such a strong midfield and proved at the back end of last season that we don't need Stevie to play well. Having said that, the day that one of Liverpool's five best players ever retires will be a sad one.
The only reason Gerrard has been out for several months due to complications with the groin. He had the groin for last two years but has been under pain killers injection as Hodgson and Rafa wouldn't let him stay away for few weeks.
How much longer is he out for, and do people think he'll come straight back into the team?
===========================================
do you even much need him?
30 seems to be the cliff off which injury prone centre mids tend to dive off, so i'd expect he's only got a few years left at the top level. probably go the same way of scholes, international retirement and cameo and sub appearances.

No, you misunderstand. I am disagreeing with that fact that you think his career is over, not the fact that he is a great player.
I am telling you that he has struggled with this injury all of his career but has dealt with it and been managed through it throughout his career. So this injury doesn't mean he is past it, as he has been a (great) player before. So just because he is 31, doesn't mean he is past it. He has at least five years left, in my opinion. Generally it is players who rely heavily on their pace, that fade away early. Gerrard doesn't, so he won't.
I expect Gerrard to play for another five years at least. His ability isn't about pace.
--------------------
Yeah Gerrard has got years left in him despite what 3mustgetlife is saying.
Gerrard had a problem with his groin for the last couple of years and finally decided to have an op on it at the end of last season as we were not in the fight for a champions league spot and there was no summer Championship, he stated this himself.
It was a good time to get the op to prolong his career for a good few more years. Of course with ops comes recovery and it is this that Dalglish and staff are carefully monitoring and ensuring he isn't rushed back too soon. Gerrard will be back and he also stated after his op that he felt fitter than he has for years (no tension in his groin) and it's just about recovery now.
Also I won't be surprised to see Gerrard move back into CM and then DM roles as he gets older, just like he started out. He is a player who can do everything so I'm sure he could be a great DM for us, which would allow Meireles, Lucas and hopefully Aquilani if he stays to get further forward!

Unfortunately I think Aqualani is off to AC Milan.
That's why Dalglish 'aint picking him just in case he gets injured.
Totally agree with the DM role for Gerrard, would suit him perfectly as old father time comes around!
I don't think his career is over; I was under the impression me stating this made it obvious – to quote myself "I do agree [with you], he has a few more years in him yet"? I do, however, think groin injury will end his career, not the same thing.
Yes, he has been dogged with it throughout his career, and up to now it has been managed. Up to now...
"The player will now begin a rehabilitation programme and is expected to return for pre-season training." read the statement on the team website. Then came the first set back (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/apr/04/steven-gerrard-liverpool-injury);
a further groin injury leaving him needing a 2nd operation (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/apr/09/steven-gerrard-liverpool-groin-operation). Now he is recovering from a groin infection (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/jul/30/liverpool-steven-gerrard-groin-infection)
"Of course with ops comes recovery and it is this that Dalglish and staff are carefully monitoring and ensuring he isn't rushed back too soon" This is misinformed to say the very least. You appear to think he has had 1 operation (!) and just how long do you think recovery from groin surgery takes? Well its 4-6 weeks. Its been 6 months since his initial surgery! Perspective: Alan Smith out 7 months with break and dislocation, Larsson out 8 months with a double compound complete fracture. Your statement hardly paints an accurate picture of voluntary surgery, further injury, secondary surgery and infection!
This also does not scream great management of the injury. To sustain an injury at a site recently operated on is 100% preventable, and infection is very common following any operation. This should have been picked up much earlier. I suppose the questions Kenny should of, and probably has, asked are why was he injured again and why didn’t you spot the infection much earlier?
Surgery does not reduce the risk of reoccurrence, and if the problem does reoccur it is often worse. As you point out, the horses mouth has already said its relieved the tension (suggesting the site was adductor longus). Every future injury suffered now increases the tension and reduces the impact the surgery had. Lets not forget and he has already injured his groin 3 times this calendar year! Again, not the greatest representation of good management.
On a side note, whats "3mustgetlife" all about? Is this how all established members treat newbies on this forum? I felt my comments were factually correct and offer valid, on-topic points. I'm not sure what I did to reduce you to petty name calling in what was fast becoming a mature, interesting debate; I have re-read my previous posts here and can't find anything derogatory or offensive? Or maybe you just belittle fellow fans and forum users when feeling out of your depth - a bid to snare other users with a "strength in numbers" approach? Hmmm.
