Three words: All seater stadia.
Agree with you about pretty much everything especially the tannoy guy.
We should be putting emphasis on our team and not the team across the road.
Tannadice is very quiet most of the time I go. However the atmosphere on the European night against Slask was great. I was in the shed at the end closest to the Poles and just going into the ground and seeing everyone on their feet and knowing that you wouldn't be sitting down for the next 90 minutes was excitement enough to invoke a really intense atmosphere.
Any surprise United went 2-0 up early on?
The answer is certainly not midday kick-offs.
Evening games always have a better atmosphere. I heard that once upon a time there were such things as Friday night games? That sounds awesome. I'd go to them, especially if they were on pay day.
The lack of refreshments is also an issue. Say it's a lovely sunny afternoon and I'd like a cool pint of cider while watching the football? Nope, can't do that. You must pay over the odds for under-average cups of bovril or coffee.
No smoking areas... That's got to be an issue, not only for me but given that 6,000+ will be turning up you would think that some of them would be smokers and cater for them. Instead of subjecting non-smokers to the sight of total gadgies havin' a fly smoke in the toilets.
Oh, and the team was mince.
I just don't think with Scotland's current health issues it'd be a good idea to allow yet more opportunities to smoke and drink.
The price of Coke/Bovril etc though is scandalous, especially as they have you over a barrell as you can't take things in. Though I've been taking in Capri-Suns these days as I refuse to pay the prices at the shop. They're perfectly legal to bring in too and are currently something like £3.50 for 20 pouches in the Co-Op. That wouldn't even buy you two cups of Coke at Tannadice!
That's the problem though isn't it?
Just because some people cannot handle themselves when having a drink or a smoke why should the rest of the population have to be deprived of these luxuries?
Nanny state at it's best. Educate the people and let them make their own decisions in life.
But that's a discussion for another day.
The problem there though is if you allow those who would get out of hand to have a drink, they will spoil it for everyone, so it's probably better just to deny the casual drinkers a drink, as they are less in number.
And anyway, if you can't go for 2 hours without a pint, you need help. Sod your cider, have an apple Capri-Sun!
There is a lot of negativity surrounding the game in general in Scotland, and that is reflected in the expectations of the fans and the atmosphere in the grounds.
At least the Dunfermline supporters have something to shout about, as they have just been promoted and are unbeaten. Plus they must surely know that they ALWAYS win at Tannadice so they must have been well up for the game.
Likewise, United fans know that the club is skint, know that we ALWAYS lose to Dunfermline, know that we have a threadbare squad, know that we have lost our best players, and know that they are turning up more thro' a sense of obligation than any expectation that the team will win or entertain us.
Lining up in a defensive formation at home to a newly promoted team, watching players unwilling to chase a loose ball because it is in the opposition half or put any sort of pressure on a defender is hardly going to inspire any atmosphere amongst supporters.
I'll keep turning up for as long as I can bear it, but I am not expecting anything other than torment and disillusion from United this season.
Away fans are always noisier than home fans at any stadium i think, the st johnstone game this weekend is my 1st of the season, so i'm hoping we turn in a better performance than last week and start scoring more of our chances. East fife beating dunfermline 2-1 in the cup, maybe they used up theyre luck at the weekend.
