You can't really say it isn't the goal of clubs (well the ones who haven't specifically said it isn't) just something that very few of them have achieved.
Its only really the big clubs it will work for, as if you have a manager in good enough to manage the club for years the chances are a bigger club will want him.
Whereas you may resist Real Madrid and stay at Arsenal you are not going to stay at Shrewsbury when Arsenal come calling for you.
Well 2 of those big clubs managed it for decades, so who is to say that isn't what clubs would like to go for?
It often doesn't work out, hence the firing but once you find a good one you just have to stick with them through the occasional rough patches.
Say Chelsea with Carlo for example.
Every time we have sacked a manager we have gone on to win a trophy so this stability stuff doesn't wash.
Yeah you also had hundreds of millions to throw at the problem....
Maybe you could have been a lot more successful for a lot less with a more long term plan in place.
Or maybe you could have won a lot more for the same level of investment with more long term planning....
Not saying we were going to repeat SAF, just that we have more chance of getting a long term manager in than Chelsea as we seem to believe in that format more than Chelsea do...
-----------------------------
Fergie distorted things hugely at Utd. I don't think it's a case that Utd believe in that format anymore than we do.
As I said normal service is resumed at Utd and we've already seen one manager come and go since Fergie retired.
I can't see us getting an interim manager in for a year, we gave Moyes a 6 year contract!
It may have been a mistake and the wrong move but it is because it is something United believe in and want to try to achieve.
I don't think Chelsea hate the idea, they just don't seem to like the idea as much as United do.
Not saying we will do something like Fergie again, or maybe we won't even ever have a long term manager again. I am just saying it seems to be something we want even more than Chelsea do. Even if wrongly its something the club likes to think about itself so will try even harder to achieve.
But do United fans want that because it separates you from other clubs?
As soon as other clubs start winning things you try and look for reasons why your win was better, or why your club is better... something other than just winning... "we won it with players that came through the ranks" or "we want the stability of a long term manager" - it means you can still celebrate who you are and separate out your title wins from other teams.
(i don't mean that as a criticism by the way)
Not to lord it over clubs, just that I think it would work out better for United, I like long term thinking.....
Tbh I'm not sure the manager sacking thing is something I generally WUM or criticise about, I might say it as reply now and again to someone who is trying to wind me up but it's never something I tend to care about.
I do generally feel sorry for the guy getting sacked though.
