I remember being absolutely gutted when we didn't get Duff, I was equally as gutted when we didn't get Kewell (although in hindsight that wasn't such a bad thing)
Brilliant pairing, not sure Duff was ever better than Robben
In the 03/04 season remember going away to Lazio and taking them apart 0-5 if I recall, then people warned (hoped) of the European hangover and a few days later we thumped Newcastle 4-0 with Duff just on fire.
Harry “Edge of your seat signing” Kewell
And everyone thought he was a bargain at £5 mil, Leeds surely knew something.
WTF happened to Duff? Was a brilliant little player.
Robben shouldn't have been sold, but when Madrid come calling it's tough to keep your players. He never really came into his own until hos move to Bayern. Like many a player his ability and accomplishments are belittled because he didn't do it at Madrid.

Watched that game on PL classics the other day I', sure Crespo scored too?
My god Chelsea were good back then, very dull by comparison today.

I remember people calling Chelsea boring back then too and I always thought they were exciting.
I remember when Roman came, even though I was a Utd fan I was excited to see all these top players come to the PL and it gave us a great challenge.
Then José came and brought his friends from Porto which really heat up the rivalry.
People can say what they please about Chelsea, but you'd have to say they spent pretty well, some of the players from back then are still there today.

Duff and Robben were amazing. Duff is such an underrated player from that era. Remember him tearing Barca apart.

Completely agree, while he was a so called ‘wonder kid’ and steadily progressed through his career he really stepped it up at Bayern and in the last couple of years has been a monster of a player. Not really sure what went wrong at Madrid, on to the next shiny new thing I guess.
Regarding leaving us, partly Madrid come calling but I think the manager was pretty fed up of him, he was injured or at least claimed to be injured all the time, not entirely sure what went on there. I did once hear a report that the Dutch medical team found some underlying problem a few years ago which they addressed. Would be interested to compared his fitness record over the years.

Leeds were crippled with debt, they were in no position to play hardball.
Robben was pretty good at Madrid. Not Bayern good but was still one of their best players.
They shouldn't have sold him either. Him and Ronaldo would have been incredible.

Honestly I remember I was so jealous that Chelsea had those two. I also remember thinking I would swap Ronaldo for Robben/Duff in that period.
Robben had already told the club he wouldn't be signing a contract extension before Madrid made a bid.
He ad spent more time that season on the treatment table than the pitch.
I think he thought he needed a change and the club thought £20 odd million for a player who will walk away for free in 12 months.
There was a season in Madrid where Robben was clearly the best player in the league, other than Messi. I think that was the Pellegrini vs Pep season. There was a 3 month or so period in Chelsea when you couldn't find a more dangerous player in Europe than Robben. Robben has always been an underrated player - even in his time at Bayern.

I don't think he is under-rated now. He is a brilliant footballer, unlike Ribery.
Pellegrini wasn't the manager when Robben was there.
"Pellegrini wasn't the manager when Robben was there."
Was the season before Pel. I wasn't too sure.
"I don't think he is under-rated now. He is a brilliant footballer, unlike Ribery."
In Bayern's treble season, I thought he was their most devastating player at the business end of the season. Decisive in the CL final, absolutely ripped Barca, Arsenal and Juve to shreds. Yet, Ribery got more recognition than him. It was caused by Heynckes who benched Robben for facking Muller. It took a long-term injury to Kroos for Robben to get back into the team.
Duff kept scoring winners. Robben tore both wings apart. Loved it.

I think it's just because Robben is generally an unlikeable character.
Ribery had the statistics but didn't really do it in the big games, for me he never has. He's a little like Hulk in that respect, gets these rave reviews but on the countless times I have seen him I don't get it
Duff going to Chelsea was the main reason Im a Chelsea fan today. As a 12 year old Irish kid who up til then had only followed International football, Duff was my favourite player. Got my first football playstation game that year (this is football 2004), and Chelsea were 'my' team (brother had madrid), primarily because they had duff. Going into secondary school was when I started following the premiership properly. Got a lot abuse for hopping on the band wagon and following the money. But I assure you it had nothing to do with it. I didnt even know that theyd recently been bought or even Romans name, all I knew was what I saw on the pitch, the first team squad and the manager.
So obviously I think back on Duff fondly as it was through him I was introduced to Chelsea.
Robben obviously a hell of player too. Couldnt have asked for a better pair of wingers back then (when they were fit).
Duff and Robben could have both ended up at United. Was a bit gutted at the time we didn't end up with either player, particularly Robben. Chelsea caaants stealing all our targets.
Unfortunately we had to make do with Ronaldo and Giggs.
I agree.
