Good post OP.
Think your main problem is both your CB. You lost Rio and Vidic this off season and IMO all you remaining CB are average at best.
Agreed. They might become decent players if they could stay fit but I wouldn't hold my breath
agree about gk and fullbacks. I have always been a fan of rafael but worried shaw would choke on the big stage. Thankfully he hasn't
loved the midfield when we played dimaria and herrera either side of blind.
hope in january we can sell mata and bring in khedera. And hope lvg grows a pair and drop rvp.
Brilliant and most lucid analysais of the situation.
* I meant "analysis", of course.
"In spite of all the injuries, we were very close with Chelsea last week and also this week we were very close, but not close enough, and we have to make steps still to improve,” .... LVG
We have a great manager, and no doubt about it, we will improve
Wanted to write something similar. Good job, what makes me laugh about those who focus on the points total is that they refuse to acknowledge the context.
If you take stats out of context to form an opinion, it is silly
Some negatives for balance. You're very welcome.
Worst league start for many many years.
Highest transfer spend in one window in the history of football.
Most expensive side to ever feature in the Premier League beaten by City on Sunday.
Can Persie looking terribly off form or dare I say past it?
Tenth in the League with the manager saying your aim is to be champions.
Manager keeps saying philosophy.
Said philosophy thus far seems to be to spend an absolute fortune and not win games.
There are many signs that things are coming good, but because of what happened last season, fans are growing more impatient.
All the players need time to gel, and perform as a unit, and this affects us most defensively. I don't necessarily feel we miss Rio and Vidic as individual players (look how they are both struggling right now), but more as a partnership and the stability that a partnership brings.
Injuries our hurting our defence and they're not used to playing together, you can tell when one is further up/back than the others. There needs to be better organisation, one of the CBs needs to step up and take control, but that is difficult for both a new player or a young player trying to settle in. That's the reason why people like Jones, Smalling and Evans are important, because they have experience or playing in/with a settled backline and can take the lead in that organisation, but of course injuries are hurting us there.
Smalling seems less vocal, I think Jones, even at a young age has shown signs that he can be voal and organise things, and Evans experience also counts here.
In midfield Carrick is so important for us - he brings a calm reassurance to the team and helps protect the back 4, still the best passer in the team by far, it's a hell of a lot to ask Blind, who has done well, to do it all and at times he has look overrun. Blind and Carrick can form a great partnership to help protect the back 4 as well as get our attacks going. Control the midfield and you can control the game.
And finally (!!!!!), we are also giving the ball away too cheaply, which puts the whole side under pressure, and could maybe fight harder in winning it back. We defend as a whole team, and need to retain the ball better, but these things will come with time. We are dependent of individual pieces of brilliance at times, but as the season wears on that will be mixed with better team play, leading to better results and points.
