Spot on, reputations are earned (or should be) over time. Players need time to mature, with every experience the best ones improve. It's great to see youth given a chance, but with it you have to make allowances. So many people on here are so unrealistic and it is really depressing at times.

Unfortunately, since the modern cult of celebrity seeped into sport, we have uncounted media and/or online outlets telling everyone that 'this one is the one'.

The agents have a part to play too and do it willingly - after all, if they can get their client an expensive transfer based on a handful of good performances, their pension is secured.

What might be called 'proper' media fill most of their sports sections with ex-player muppets who are incapable of a neutral analysis (or in Merson's case, are just incapable) or just don't have enough knowledge of the game or the English languare to be able to confidently say 'No, this guy's crap Garry'

Plus, as they see it, any media frenzy will boost their viewing figures.

If we want to see players praised because they earned it over time rather than having been the subject of hyperbolic BS, I think we'll have a long wait.
