as would an option to "opt out" of a thread you have commented on... you know when it starts out on one subject and gets hijacked and 80 comments later is basically 3 people arguing over something unrelated to the original article.

Its not a popularity contest.
Tell you what would be good.. The reply button being disabled after a pre set amount of replies.
There would be an option to arrange comments by rating. Would be useful on large threads.
No to like/dislike. This aint facebook.

The issue with comments is that it makes up the vast majority of the site, so anything that joins with it in a many to one relationship such as likes, or edits(storing historcal) causes it to explode and increse load on the servers. As we would need to store who had already liked in order to stop repeat voting, as it isnt a case of just incrementing a like count(which would be cheap to implement).
Surely arranging comments by rating would kill the flow of any conversation back and forth? Surely it would mean you are just read the comments that other people find interesting (or people supporting a fellow poster) as opposed to those comments that you would find interesting yourself?
I think some sort of live audio commentary to accompany live threads would be good.
Oh, and maybe some sort of go check in would also improve the site.
Yeah i wouldnt like that idea. We see that implemented on the Guardian blogs or the BBC blogs. They arrrange comments by popularity then if you want to view all of them in chronological order than you need to click view all. Its fine the way it is.
