1999

99 had the better keeper, by margain albeit.

2008 had a better defence slightly, althoughi would take irwin over Evra all day long and stam. Not taking anything away from stam either who was sheer class.

99 midfeild was obviously a class apart from 08.

And despite the attack, I still think due to cole and yorkes partnership I would still think I would take those two above tevez and Rooney. Even with ronaldo there.

Yorke in terms of sheer ability is the best striker the club have had in decades. How he didn't win wpoty in 99 is still beyond me, he was head and shoulders above rivalso that year.

Overall I don't think there's much in it. I couldn't honestly say who was the better side

So Stretty, youre saying you would take the 99 keeper, midfield and strikers plus one of the defence but you couldnt say who would win?

Yeah, but that's down to preference. Interma of ability both were very close.

And i also would have beckham in the team so not the whole midfeild. Should have cleared that up.

I see no way the 2008 midfield could compete with the 99 one but then how would Johnsen and Irwin cope with the interchanging attack of 2008 which has been my favourite of recent years.

Are you saying you would have Beckham in your team?

If you had to pick players from just those two sides what would your team be?

2008

Ronaldo is phenomenal and I think him and Rooney would have run circles past the fairly slow Stam.

Oh, and Vidic & Ferdinand would have effectively shackled Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke

posted on 26/8/11

the years haven't been kind to yorke and cole's reputations, but don't forget they were absolutely unplayable that season.

posted on 26/8/11

And scholes would outpass scholes
Giggs would go past giggs as if he wasn't there

They were good, but Vidic/Ferdinand are far better athletes than defences that Cole/Yorke played against in '99.

And Stam/Johnsen didn't have to face the kind of athletes that Ronaldo or Rooney are. The game has changed in just 10 years!

in my opinion, the overall squad of 1994 was better than both those of 1999 and 2008 anyway.

the 2008 team was better. Since then we have reached another 2 champions league finals ubeaten and did what the 99 team did win 3 titles in a row missed out by 1 point like the 99 team missed out in 98. In europe the 2008 team has broken virtually every record there is i.e. home winning run and away unbeaten run. In 2008 we won the CL unbeaten in 2009 unbeaten to the final and likewise 2011 unbeaten to final. This team currently is better but the 1999 team had a similar never say die attitude that won them the treble. In the fa cup arsenal should have knocked man utd out but somehow we stayed in it with the penalty save then in extra time giggs scored that sensational goal.

If there was a match up I wouldn't be suprised it would have been a 2-2 draw. Lets say you played it was in fifa classics side I wouldn't be suprised if the ratings were evenly matched overall.

Interesting that no one mentions Hargreaves. He was playing a lot of the big games that season (and Giggs only came on in the CL final for instance as a sub). However, you can't look beyond Keane for the midfield enforcer position.

I like Eric_Cantona_7's 4-3-3 selection: quite a coherent team and it enables us to accommodate both Beckham and Ronaldo. For the sake of being different and sticking with 4-4-2, I'll go for:

Schmeichel

Neville
Vidic
Ferdinand
Evra (by a very tight margin over Irwin)

Ronaldo
Keane
Scholes
Giggs

Rooney
Cole

...Andrew Cole may not be one of the best two strikers from those two squads, but I think his movement and pace would have suited the passing and fluidity you'd get from the supporting cast of Giggs, Scholes, and Ronaldo.

On paper, you'd struggle to say that a lot of the 1999 players were obviously better. But I think we can say that the 2008 team (and above all the 2008 Fergie) had a lot more know-how and tactical sophistication.
