Scholes Being Placed Above His Station

End of the day Schole is remembered as the premier leagues best midfielder since it began and one who players like Xavi and Zidane and co adored and tried to emulate. No arguing with that.

Zidane was better than both. Easily.

Just a selection of quotes from some former and current greats of the game on Paul Scholes.

Darren Fletcher: “We won’t ever see another one like Paul Scholes. He is a legend and a real benchmark. He is not interested in the modern-day footballer’s life off the pitch, but he is a world-class player on it”

Phil Neville: “Paul, for me, is the best player in the England team. It worries teams. Speak to any other international team and they will single Paul out as England’s key player. For me, he doesn’t get the full credit that he deserves. He is a world-class player and deserves to be up there with the likes of Zidane and Figo.”

Nicky Butt: “In my opinion he’s up there with the top three or four players to play for United.”

Jordan Henderson: “Sad to hear of Paul Scholes retirement! One of the best midfielders to grace the Premiership! Idolised him for years! Legend.”

Wayne Routledge: “Possibly the best midfielder the Prem has seen.”

Robbie Savage: “Seriously legend is overused but Scholesy is a legend, end of!”

Micah Richards: “I think we were all disappointed because we all know what he can do. He’s always in the right position, always seems to be at the end of the box when the ball drops in. The complete midfielder. When he’s fit, he’s the best. Some go missing but he’s in the right place at the right time. He’s my favourite player of all-time, unbelievable. If you give him a chance it’s a goal, isn’t it?”

Joey Barton: “Just heard Paul Scholes has retired, best I’ve ever played against by a mile. Most technically gifted player in english history. Legend.”

Barry Bannan: “The one that stands out the most was Paul Scholes. I look up to him and was lucky enough a couple of games ago to play against United for Villa and I got his top. That’s a big thing for me because in my eyes he’s probably the best player in the world. Even now, even though he’s old, he’s still one of the best in the league.”

Giuseppe Rossi: “One of the greats in his position has retired. Was an honor playing with Paul Scholes.”

Danny Simpson: “Paul Scholes the legend, best footballer I’ve ever witnessed in real life! Fact.”

Ian Holloway: “When he passes the ball it stays passed. The ball goes exactly where he wants it to. I have always loved him for that. I played against him once or twice and he is an absolute genius. He is a role model for anyone who wants to play football. He is a joy to watch. In fact, I wish he was 21, then I could see his career all over again.”

Ray Wilkins: “I just love Paul Scholes. He’s been the best footballer in our division for the last ten years. He’s a a wonderful player.”

Sam Allardyce: “There is not a better midfield player in the world.”

"So masterful that he led his team to how many trophies? He was decent but please don't get carried away."

Ah. The old trophy point. Cause Scholes dragged to all those trophies singlehandedly right? Had nothing to do with him playing in amazing sides.

Arsenal have finished in the top 4 for years and years, are you suggesting that Fabregas was some kind of lone talent amongst dross? Teams filled with porpoor players dont do that.

Of course you would mate. You're the same guy who said Carrick's currently better than Ramsey.

Huh? Please don't tell me you actually think otherwise

Apparently Carrick's always been an average player in our below par midfield, and Ramsey's a young star of europe, or words to that effect. I think it's on the can an Arsene Wenger team challenge thread.

Dubbed isn't a bad poster imo. He's not very self aware though when he calls people biased. Definitely one of the ones more caught up in his own teams hype.

So if Scholes was so amazing, remind me why he never had the influence in Europe and on the international stage that other great midfielders had? Please don't mention the "other midfielders were in great teams" bs as he played in some pretty great Utd teams himself. Like I said in another thread the other day, even Mendietta has a much greater impact on thAt Valencia team in Europe.

Also, why did so many England managers decide to play him out of position? You really expect a Spanish manager playing Xavi out of position just so he could fit someone else into the team?

Zidane was better than both. Easily.

He wasn't. Was part of a real team that undercieved and whilst part of one of the top midfields at juve he did little.

Keane back pocketing him was a joy to behold.

Very good and a big game player in finals but overrated.

Iniesta whizzes all over zizou as well.

For the majority of that season he was bang average, including being anonymous when Barca trounced them at the Bernabeu. A game in which Ronaldinho ran riot and got the standing ovation.

Scholes had an eye for a killer pass, but as our play has always been so focussed down the wings that tended to be where his through balls were aimed.

Never had the eye, or excecution, for a killer pass like Xavi did, not even close.

Carrick is actually a player I've ALWAYS liked (the way I liked Milner when most ridiculed him) and I always thought England could have used him more, but he's hilariously overrated by United fans. He's a unique player with a unique, but limited skillset and unique value who brings balance to Man U's team, but he's JUST a good player. Hearing the pedestal some of you put him on is amazing. It's just one of those annoying phases in football of suddenly recognizing an underappreciated player's talent and massively overcompensating by overhyping him to ludicrous levels.

There's little point comparing Carrick to Ramsey and Wilshere as I've seen here recently. They excel each other at various things and none are close to world class.

Same with that farce of awarding Giggs with the POTY when they realized he was never good enough at his peak to win it. Not saying he wasn't a great player but there was always someone better.

Spain ran rings round France in that WC. They were the only team to outplay France. France edged over with that little extra ruthlessness and experience. Zidane never came close to any "destruction" of Xavi. Zidane is an all-round better player than Xavi, Pirlo or Scholes, but in the ability to orchestrate the tempo of a game as CM playmakers, the latter 3 are better. Xavi is miles better. A very unique footballer in the arts and embodies a revolutionary style of a game. Think tiki-taka, think Xavi.

Think of Scholes. Then think of tackling.

Great player, but far from the best.

Scholes is overrated like crazy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He was a above the average performer in the Premier League. Would he have done it abroad? Dont think so.

What the f has tackling gotta do overall with evaluating scholars as a player 😂😂😂😂

It was his only weakness and wasn't even close to being his primary job.

Zidane mighty be somewhat overrated by some on this forum but he is also criminally underrated by many here.

Scholes - even as United fan - is not a patch on Zidane. Pirlo too. And Zidane is better than Xavi.

Anyhow, i suppose it *mainly* comes down to preference here as they are all exceptional players. Players of their ilk (CM/CAM/AM etc) are just not around in the game atm.

The England managers didn't have the balls to do what was right clearly, and we underachieved as a result. No point taking their side. Scholes was the one moved out of position maybe because he was older, and Lampard and Gerrard were the new kids on the block.

If any of those 3 had to be sacrificed it should have been Gerrard. Lampard and Scholes would have been better for England. Either that or play them all in a different formation.

Is this some joke?

"Apparently Carrick's always been an average player in our below par midfield, and Ramsey's a young star of europe, or words to that effect. I think it's on the can an Arsene Wenger team challenge thread."

If you want to have a serious discussion, then don't lie.

I said Carrick was a good player. But he currently looks better than he is in an average Man U midfield.

It was you who ludicrously claimed Schneiderlin, Carrick and even more laughable Gerrard (the current Gerrard) were all better than the Welshman.
