There has never been the joined up thinking at the FA to bring our game into the modern era. For heavens sake we have Roy Hodgson as the England manager. Not so long ago it was Stuart Pearce a top clogger as the u-21 boss. It's a facking joke.

Gareth Southgate is as thick as shîte. Why would any young player be inspired by his football knowledge? Totally clueless. Might as well employ Andy Townsend.

Time to sack the lot of the gin swilling old dodderers

I watched the game and think you're being rather harsh on Southgate.

Kane was far too isolated as Portugal won the midfield battle particularly through Carvalho, the midfield runners did not get forward enough- but maybe that's because England had no dominant central midfielder in front of their defence as their own.

In the end you've lost by a goal- a rather unfortunate one- it's not an U21 team full of quality players and I think they gave a performance that rather matched their ability.

"Might as well employ Andy Townsend. "

that could actually work

they'd all gather around and agree among themselves that he's utterly clueless and they should just go out, play footie and try to create goals

Marce.....Kane isolated? Yes, and who set the team up? And who failed to change it? And who decided evertime to bang it long to kane who was isolated?

Its awful, every other eurioean team like spain..germany..portugal..italy manage to play keep ball and move, we have no idea...none.

it was depressing watching england tonight.

i know we don't have the best talent around but it's quite a reality check that the portgueuese players have grasped the fundamentals ball skills that english players still lack.

And these Portuguese players are probably technically behind the french, italian, german and spanish kids.

I hope we don't give up, have to still work hard and improve the technique of our players. Don't give into the dinosaurs.

Gareth southgate championed smaller pitches and an emphasis on changing grass roots football to focus on a more possesion style of play.

that doesnt happen over night.

Our under 21's are still crap, like the seniors. Thats why you have to play to their strength

Southgate is known as a progressive coach, rather than thick as pig chit. When we lose sometimes its because the other team is better.
There often seems to be an attitude that when we lose it is someones fault. But when we win it is because we are good. ie not the fault of the opposition.
This is for all teams not just England.
Apart from the fact football goes in cycles, we put a lot of emphasis on giving 100%, guts, pace, power. But much less on ball control, skill and reading the game.
We as fans want a gung ho approach and get restless if we pass the ball about waiting for an opening.
Football needs to be properly taught at school IMO.

I think the biggest impact will be FA's change to not rush kids into 11 a side too early. We've recently adopted the 7 a side to 9 a side to 11 a side approached used by countries such as Spain.

11 a side when you're 12 years old is far too daunting a prospect and kids just aren't developed enough to deal with it so we resort to long ball at an early age as it's the most effective way of playing at that point. This carries on through the years.

Only things is the effects of the change won't happen overnight or for a few years yet but give it time and I think we'll see a change.
