doherty in midfield when, as far as i know, evans and ronan are available is so stupidly tinkerman as to be not worth further comment.
it does show also how lacking we still are for a playmaker, constructive midfielder other than kmac
I would support Kenny in giving some game time to some players that didn't play on Saturday. And I am sure that Martinez, EEL, Price and Ojo would have benefitted from that. The selection of Doherty in midfield is the one that baffled everyone including I suspect the player. The only possible positive was that he was able to cover Iorfa when he went forward. With Coady and Price both players that lie deep in midfield it was a game where only Ojo and to a lesser extent Iorfa provided support to the attackers. Net result was a somewhat unconvincing win against a League Two team that were made to look a lot better than they are.
I thought Martinez looked good and can provide genuine cover and competition to Ikeme. EEL and Hause are ok but not ready to use both together. And I do find the amount of times Golborne moves forward and then checks and passes the ball backwards very frustrating. That's nothing to do with Sako going cause he did it often last season. Ojo certainly has great potential and had 3 or 4 outstanding moments in the game
thought Martinez looked good
Really?????????
Yes really. Made two good saves, caught some crosses well, distributed the ball better than Ikeme. I can think of a couple of errors he made but should we be looking for perfection from a young player making his debut? Take him ahead of mccarey any day
gem, do I detect a tad of sarcasm in your opening statement ?
I have no idea why Kenneth would have decided to go that way last night, has Doherty ever played in midfield before ? I'll put it down to a strange day at the office for KJ.
I would have given young Bright 20 odd minutes instead of Alf just to see if he could perform under a bit more pressure.
Still, end of the day we're in round 2 gem, lets hope we come out Saturday and unleash Hell on Hull
Other than the selection of Doherty on the right (what prompted Jackett to do that I guess we'll never know) it was actually a stronger team than I was expecting and it was a good idea to give a few players that missed out on Saturday their first competitive football of the season.
I didn't go but sounds like some poor defending at times (despite having two defensive midfield players) from a very inexperienced back line, but a decent threat going forward.
There was some dodgy defending and my conclusion was that EEL and Hause are ok at the moment to play alongside Batth or Stearman but not ready to both pkay together. But last night was surely the right time to give them a chance.
We have a few players that can play deep in midfield but none of them are in the Karl Henry mould of ball winners. So teams are able to play the ball around right up to the edge of our box and that does cause some hairy moments defensively no matter how good the back 4 is
That chimes with what I'm reading and hearing DJ - both are decent cover, no issue with either of them playing with Batth or Stearman but lets hope they don't end up as a pairing too often too early.
Mornin' OhSo, hope things are cool mate
".... Mick got slated for playing players out of position and as far as I'm concerned Kenny deserves the same criticism for the same offence."
Not necessarily. Stubborn old Mick kept doing it for years because he wanted to squeeze as many of his "put a shift in" grafters in his team.
Jackett wanted to give Doherty a run out in a different role last night. If we've learned anything about Jackett, its that he's not one for square pegs in round holes. I was surprised he picked the side he did last night, but by all accounts it didn't work and I'd be surprised if its a formation we see again from the start of many games.
"If we've learned anything about Jackett, its that he's not one for square pegs in round holes."
I think every manager has players who they trusts and who they think benefit the team by being in the pitch even in if it is in an unfamiliar role or not the one they are most comfortable in. I'd keep an eye on how many times Edwards lines up wide this season before judging whether Jackett is guilty of square pegs in round holes.
Strange line-up for sure and one that didn't work according to those who went and the reports I've read.
Nice to win though and get through to the next round. Wondered what it felt like winning a cup game!
Jackett does like to tinker, but surely this should be done in training and practice matches, not in important games.
Be careful gem, I'm supposed to be the negative one.
Doherty and Edwards are both good guys who the manager likes and trusts. In Micks days they were the kind of player referred to as favourites but every manager will keep on the right side of players he has faith in to do a genuine job wherever they are played.
I can only think for the above reasons he wanted to give Doc a game but didn't want to leave out Iorfa. To be fair when RVLP came on late he was no improvement

Cyp, I don't mean to be negative and certainly don't want to be but I can't remember feeling so deflated at the end of a match we have WON!
I felt that kenny exceeded himself in the tinkering department last night. I agree with DJ that you have to use thes games to give some of the 'others' a chance but Kenny stated before the game he was sticking to essentially the same side as Saturday with only a couple of changes. He then changed the Goalkeeper and almost the entire midfield. The one person who needed game time above anyone else, ALF, he left on the bench.
As I said, I like Kenny and respect him for what he has done for the club thus far but I sincerely hope we don't have too many more team selections like last night's.

If we are going to unleash hell on Hull on Saturday the players are going to be knackered by kick off time on Sunday
And yes Ohso, you may also detect a tad more sarcasm in the above post

Me neither mate. I call each game as I see it (or read it ) and comment on each action or event at Wolves in the same way. Of course despite whatsitinthesundancestate continually blabbering on that we all have differing opinions, he continues to spout on about negativity whilst "forgetting" about the negativity that came out of Florida during our stay in a much higher division than we are in now and whilst playing much better opposition than Newport feckin County.
When Kenny (or any other manager for that matter) gets things right (signing KMac, Dicko Afobe, winning L1 with a record points haul etc..) he will get my support and praise. Similarly, when he "screws-up", (signing Leon, Sagbo, Graham, tinkering and making stupid team selections), I reserve the right to criticise.
my own view also cyp.
kenny has done an awful lot more right than wrong here, i'm happy with him overall, but when he messes up i will say so.
Completely agree gem, it was a win but didn't feel like one and Kenny will have come away with more questions than answers.
I don't care if Doherty is married to his daughter and has saved Kennys life 15 times, starting him last night was feckin stupid and pointless and Kenny needs a slap for a missed opportunity.
People need to forget about eno, he won't be featuring this season unless we accumulate injuries.
Biggest disappointment after the Doherty balls up is ALF not getting a start, though I wonder if he just isn't match fit yet as he missed most of pre season with Cardiff?
Strange selection with doherty on the right wing, everyone in the ground could see it wasn't working so I was surprised Mr Jackett didnt change it earlier. There was some awful defending too, talk about static. Ojo looked very useful indeed and Coady is very impressive.
Team for sunday would be.
ikeme
iorfa,stearman,hause,golbourne
rvlp, Coady, kmac, ojo
Afobe
Dicko.
And by the way, what is Kennys problem with graham?
Far and away the standout of the u21s the last six months, even man of the bleedin prestigious tournament but yet Kenny won't go anywhere near him?
