Is this even a debate? Stones by an absolute country mile - ask your 'special' manager

For pure talent has to be Stones. But Smalling is taking the Kevin Keegan route of making the best of limited talent.

Smalling has limited talent on the ball. Defensively he's got talent in abundance.

Stones has talent on the ball but is limited in talent defensively.

Jones has limited talent in both departments.

I haven't seen much of Stones but Jones is absolute pap and Smalling is an OK defender with no technical ability at all.

Personally, I think that as a centre back Smalling currently eats the other two for breakfast. I think all three can surpass the level Smalling is at right now though. Stones is the best on the ball and I'd like to see him in a team where he gets to make the most of this ability and also gets teated defensively fairly regularly so he gets forced to sink or swim in a way (so Everton might be ideal for him right now). Jones gets a rough ride but he could go on to become a good all round defender even if not a great one. A quality defensive squad player for a top side though. Smalling I think could be one of the very best pure defenders of his generation, all be it a weaker generation for defenders right now, but is not ever going to excel at carrying the ball out from the back, so needs a partner who does this very well.

The three could compliment each other nicely in the England squad in the near and more distant future.

None of them will ever be as talented as Terry.

That's probably true. Terry was exceptional. And then when you think that Rio Ferdinand, Campbell and Adams were all superior to JT at their peak, you realise how blessed England have been in recent times with defenders.

to be fair Smalling has been immense this season and is a big reason why we didnt concede a goal in our first 3 league games.

Can't believe so many people watch Everton tbh. I do and I know why and for me Stones is far an away the best. Smalling has found some form in an anti footballing system.

no one knows which it is at any given time

Smalling has really stepped up a level this season but stones just shades it for his consistency of the last couple of seasons. I would like to see smalling continue this form for the rest of the season its long overdue.

Defensively, I think anyone who is better than Terry will be a beast. However, I doubt any of them will get near. Also, as an outsider, it always makes me laugh that people don't see how good Terry is with the ball at his feet. The only thing he ever lacked was pace. It'll be interesting to see if his loss of form this season is just that or if he's lost that edge in his speed of thought which is really important for a player like him who depends on his positioning and reading of the game.
