Anyway in answer to the question. Initially there were a few reasons, to accommodate an audience who had previously been served by 12 moderators employed by the BBC and whose sensibilities can often be upset with a profane term, secondly and I am sure you know this, that corporate firewalls analyse content and on account of us not being a trusted domain like the BBC we needed to ensure that any terms that could trigger specific classifications and associated bannings were best avoided. One must counter your impression about Google Ads, in particular AdX they are arguably the most sensitive in terms of profanity. This is mainly due to the ads being representative of brands who like to protect their image. Google(which is and ad company) in particular now sees past diacritical characters as to the actual letter intended, as well as the use of spaces or non alpha characters between letters. This a few months go, led to a further enhancement of the swear filter such that it performs(a far from complete) diacritical transformation of all text sent to the site prior to running it through the filters.

I believe in 2011 there were 36, 606 replacement sites and of the few that are now left, I'm pretty sure some of them allow swearing. So no doubt people go to where their tastes are sufficiently indulged.

Well the OP's assertion that google dont care about swearing is clearly bullsh't.

Dont think the Admins wanted to delete several thousand comments and spend time overhauling the swear filter to pick up accents. Well maybe A2 did
