Honestly naby i really struggle to see how you can possibly say whether TLJ is a good link film when we have no idea what the fack it’s being linked to yet?
Seems absurd to me
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Because a link goes from something, to something.
Granted we don’t know whether it’ll serve the latter part of that correctly but we know for sure that it didn’t do the fomer. And this is irrespective of whether you like the film or not, the plot lines and characters weren’t developed. Best case scenario is now that 2 and 3 are cohesive.
I watched an interview with Coppola once and he put it something like this...
If you’re going to make a 3 film arc, then the first one has to be a skeleton looking for a body. The second one has to be the organs, the flesh and the skin and the last one has to be the conscious brain.
That’s such a good way of thinking about it. The second film should always add layers to the story and give meaning to character motivations. If anything, TLJ stripped it back with the excuse of ‘subverting expectations’.
Now we have a third film and nobody’s quite sure what the purpose of the trilogy is. That’s unforgivable for a Star Wars trilogy which has previously prided itself on narrative - even when the visuals have let people down.
There is no purpose to this trilogy, that's the problem. Disney didn't bother with any details like having an actual planned story arc over three films before they started filming TFA. Why bother with small details like that if you're Disney ?? They've just played Chinese whispers with this trilogy handing it to different directors and letting them run with it.
I can only assume that their plan was to gauge how audiences reacted to each film as they came out so that they can change things as they went along with each film but that clearly hasn't worked in terms of making good Star Wars movies. It has made them a lot of money though which was always their prime directive so maybe they don't care anyway.

This may come as a shock to you, but that’s everyone’s prime directive.

Yes but no
I’m not defending Disney, they’re always out to make a quick buck and will remake any piece of shiiiiiit film to do so.
But every film studio is, so their not exactly on their own there. Everyone is trying to make money out of their films. No ones going out there going “i don’t care if i lose hundreds of millions on this because i only care if i like it!”
I agree that every studio is out to make money, however I do think the brand strength and merchandising potential mean Star Wars is a special case. The amount of money they can potentially make outside of ticket sales mean it’s easy to focus on things other than storyline and characters.

Is true, but it's kinda a cavalier attitude - if they keep making quality films then they can keep doing that forever. If they don't, maybe not.
I dunno, I guess there will always be a market for kids
“I do wish they had kept one director throughout all 3 though, i think that should be what they gear towards for the next trilogy. Or at the very least have a producer write the film and bring in his directors to carry out his/her vision. Looks like that could be happening with benioff and Weiss so we’ll see.”

Well it's not my prime directive. And believe it or not but that hasn't always been the case in the movie business. There was a time when people actually tried to make really good movies first and foremost.
George Lucas himself didn't expect A New Hope to become the crazy smash hit that it did. Or so he said anyway. And while Return of the the Jedi was clearly made with merchandise in mind Empire certainly wasn't and was just made to be the best Star Wars movie it could be.
By comparison this new trilogy has been made as a money making enterprise first with quality, care and love for the product a distant second and it shows horribly with this corporate, soulless mess we've been served up.
Breaking News: Benioff and Weiss will no longer be writing and producing their Star Wars trilogy.
Yet more hiccups.
George Lucas himself did the same thing with the prequels Superb. He held rights to the merchandise and that’s why we ended up with Grevious and Jar Jar and pod racers etc.
It’s the business these days. First and foremost companies and studios want to make their money back, just see how much writers/directors talk about all the ‘compromises’ they have to make (which is really just the studio saying do this).
I’m not saying i like it at all, but that’s just how it is so I’m not quite sure what your point is in signalling Disney out for it with these films. It’s standard, look at Warner bros and what they’re doing with the Harry Potter franchise right now for example.

It's neither here or there in my opinion. There are plenty of alternatives out there so I'm not too concerned about this news.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Even as a fan of the Disney Star Wars films this is somewhat concerning to me.
On its own in isolation it’s not a big deal. But look at the short history of Disney Star Wars films and the revolving door of their directors/producers they’ve signed on then binned off:
Josh Trank
Lord and Miller on Solo
Colin Trevarro (spelling)
Benioff and Weiss
They’ve only made 4 films so far!
Kathleen Kennedy got some splaining to do.

If A New Hope and Empire were made in the same way that Disney have made these sequel trilogy movies then I seriously doubt that Star Wars would be the phenomenon that it is today. In fact I'm quite certain it wouldn't be.
And I have every right to signal Disney out because they've done a particularly poor job with this trilogy for a franchise that I hold dear and that I grew up with.
Is Disney+ or whatever it is coming to the UK in time for Mandalorian then so we get it on Nov 12th? Whats the price per month? Cannot wait for this!

No. There’s no actual date but likely March time next year when the Disney / Sky contracts start to finish
Can they not release the series to another streaming service in the UK then ffs until then?

We get Disney+ November 19th here in NZ.

Surely a lot of potential UK paying subscribers will just be finding other ways to watch it when each episode is aired week by week in the US then? VPNs/kodi boxes etc.
