My thoughts; watched it last night and I’m very disappointed.

The film wasn’t without merit, the development of Kylo as the evil in the film was really good but there was just so much wasted time and opportunity.

Snoke - the film began with him really sizzling imo. The rebuke of Kylo and show of strength, loved it. And then he was killed before he really got going. No idea who he was, where he came from, any motivations whatsoever. Just there, powerful and the gone. Such a waste.

Plasma - genuine question, what was the point? As a character she was a total waste of time.

DJ and the whole casino scene - struggling to see the value in it. Other than a bit of backstory for Rose and the visuals (which were very impressive). Likewise DJ. Presumably he was there for the double cross but it was a hell of a set up for that.

Leia - can fly through outer space now apparently. Utterly ridiculous and led to pockets of laughter in the showing I was at.

Finn - despite being in the film a fair amount, I’m not sure what he added. He just didn’t really do much. They still seem to be running the ‘coward who will only fight to save Rey’ thing that was in TFA. Up until the point he seemed prepared to commit suicide at the end. I liked his character in TFA, I’m just not sure it went anywhere in this film.

BB8 - can act as a massive fuse and also steal/drive a walker. Apparently.

We’re now 2 films in and Rey has still received no more than 20 mins training. I liked the flawed hero angle with Luke and redemption at the end but the death seemed a bit weak to me. Just popped off.

The biggest issue for me though was just the lack of chemistry between the characters. That it why I enjoyed TFA (despite limitations as a film) but it just wasn’t there this time imo.

It just felt like they looked at what is popular and thought, let’s just do that. The mind link worked in Harry Potter, let’s just do that with Rey and Kylo. Everyone loves game of thrones so let’s just kill of as many characters as possible. Works for them.

Ultimately what I feel I was left with was a bunch of set piece scenes with little purpose or chemistry, with some characters underdeveloped and some utterly wasted.

About an hour in I was thinking where was this going, it was all over the place and it was popping in and out of scenes, I'll be honest I was a bit bored for about 20 mins

Then it got better, so many holes and unnecessary moments, Snoke went out without any explanation or back story, Rey's parents?

Too much comedy also, they did a great job on Rogue One and TFE, just felt a bit let down.

Liked it, didn't love it

Preferred the Rey came from nobodies tbh Luke or Kenobi wouldn’t break the Jedi code to father anyone so if they used that it would’ve cheapened them.

Like Kylo said this is his story and she shouldn’t be here.

Perfect

Think the ending gave a bit more clarity with the kid in the barn who moved the broom, had the rebellion ring on innit

Would have been fine with Rey being a no-one but it just doesn't quite tie in with everything else in the films.

Like the lightsabre specifically being drawn to her and showing her those memories, Obi-Wan actually talking to her through them. Plus the fact she seems to have no training and be able to hold it with Ren who's had loads of training from Luke and Snoke.

Of course Ren might be lying about her parents, but the fact that she's knew it herself deep down suggests that he's not, which doesn't really tie into any of her actions for me and seems like poor disregard for TFA & patchy writing on this one.

I personally think what Kylo Ren said was to throw her off, I'm sure that storyline will be different

It wasn't a bad film, visually it was very good, but the storyline was very much off

From when Luke threw away the lightsabre at the start it just didn't have the same flow.. hope they pull it around

This means that JJ will have the same for episode 9. He may well discard every idea Johnson had, just like Johnson dismissed all the foreshadowing in Ep 7.
_________

Which is probably the biggest problem. Someone should have at least mapped out the way the story was going to go and given the director of each film a certain amount of freedom to get to the end of each film.

It felt like RJ didn't have any interest in continuing JJs story and it didn't really add up properly as a result.

I don't dislike it or anything, I just don't feel much for it and don't really have much desire to watch the next one after it ended.

TFE and Rogue One were both excellent, looking forward to seeing Solo, hopefully they turn around the next SW film.

They’ve all been good for a variety of reasons.

Solo film isn’t really hitting it for me. I think it’s beva I don’t think anyone but Ford can be him.

I’m looking forward to Rian new trilogy. Be nice to get away completely from skywalker etc and have fresh ideas

Watched Last Jedi yesterday and thought it was a shambles sadly.

Admittedly it had some good bits but so much of the movie was an utter mess.

Mark Hamill was criminally underused in this movie and I agree with him saying that he fundamentally disagreed with nearly every decision that Rian Johnson had made about his character in this movie. They could have done something truly epic with Luke Skywalker in this movie but failed.

On Luke's island those helper creatures looked like something I'd see on a budget CBBC program. Completely took me out of the movie as did all the silly quips that didn't work for the most part.

Almost everything involving Finn didn't need to be in the movie as far as I could tell. His little side trip to that weird Casino planet could have been taken out of the movie and wouldn't have made any difference to the ending.

Leia flying through space was really weird as well. She looked like Mary Poppins or something else that has no place in a Star Wars movie.

Also the First Order fleet being right next to the Rebel ships for such a long period of time in the movie and not being able to obliterate them all straight away was laughable. What a load of nonsense.

Again so little gets explained in this movie. Who is Snoke ? No idea? Who is Rey and why did is she such a powerful force user if her parents were merely poor traders who sold her off ? No idea.
