I knew he was your hero Wellies. You seem to base your contributions on his teachings:
"If I wanted you to understand it all, I would have explained it better."
Mystic as well as a genius
Cruyff not me although the Cruyff turn is still my signature move (that's maybe cos it's the only one I can do though).
One for Spart too:
“Playing football is very simple, but playing simple football is the hardest thing there is.”
Who's your hero then Vidals, Beckenbauer?
Terry Pratchett maybe?
“The thing about football - the important thing about football - is that it is not just about football.”
Should imagine him being up there with Bestie being managed by old big head would be the start of some kind of dream team.
Do you ever read the Guardian Vidals?
“Why couldn’t you beat a richer club? I’ve never seen a bag of money score a goal.” Prophetic.
Yeah think he'll start in the Heaven first XI - will Clough play him in a 4-3-3 though?
My boyhood hero. That Dutch team was a cracker.
Real shame, a player of a whole generation, in the Pele class, very skilful in an era when defenders would take lumps out of you with no sanction.
I can remember the Dutch side of the mid seventies, (perhaps more so around 78 in Argentina WC) as being some of the best football I watched. Best side not have won the competition.
Cloughie may let him into the Heaven XI reserves upstairs!
Still think he had a lot to offer the game too despite seeming to fall out with a lot of people towards the end.
Denied seeing him play against the Rams by some cheating Italians.
Loved him.
Football genius.
RIP Johan
I was a mere stripling of just 16 when I watched the 1974 World Cup, and I can honestly say that the team featuring Cruyff, Neeskens, Rep et al, was the most wonderful football team I have ever seen, to this day.
They were absolutely sublime, and I feel lucky to have witnessed them. Forget the fact that Germany won the final. In terms of sheer footballing class, they were nowhere near them. Greatest team ever. R.I.P. Johan - one of the triumvirate for me: Cruyff, Pele, Best.
