Stewart Downing and Thoughts on England

Mceachren and Barkley should be in the team. Both of them more talented than anything england have right now, except ofcourse wilshere.

Why not? what have we got to lose?

posted on 2/9/11

Why Parker all he does is run around aimlessly then give away a foul or win the ball to a 360 degree turn and play it back to the guy he recieved it off. No way should he be near an england side.

Also, how could I forget Phil Jones. The guy is just class and I hate praising United players.

posted on 2/9/11

Jones will play more than ferdinand this year. He will be a united regular by the end of the year and ferdinand will bottle the challenge and retire 'injured' jones is a very accomplished defender and will only get better playing for man united

posted on 2/9/11

Jones may well be in the team but remember he will still only be 19/20.

In a big tournament Fabio may opt for experience.]

McEachran and Barkley no chance they'll make the starting eleven in time for Euros.

Arsene grey cells, I realise your last point, but if we are to compete against the likes of Spain at the euros, then players like McEachran and Barkley are vital.

VERY good technically, potential to be as good as iniesta/Xavi.

Having a midfield like this:

................Defensive midfielder.........
Wilshere......................................Mceachran
.........................Barkley...............................

is our answer to the spanish:

......................Defensive midfielder.............
Xavi.....................................................Alonso
.........................Iniesta.................................

How many games have you seen Barkley play in? Two? On Match of the Day?

This is the problem with England. We hype players up so early that they can only fail. My brother's a big Chelsea fan and he says McEachran wouldn't be where he is without the emergence of Wilshere, because they are so similar-looking, people assume McEachran is good. Not in the same league according to my Chelsea fan brother.

We cannot compete against Spain in any other way than playing the best players for the best system, as I have listed above.

proof that capello does't have a clue what he's doing.

cleverly and jones both had IMO their best seasons last season but because they were playing for 'smaller' teams, no call up. They join or rejoin united and all of a sudden, call up to first team?

Yes, Downing is completely average. Johnson is a fantastic talent, Mancini needs to play him more often or he should consider moving. He's 24 now (I think), he should be playing every week, he's gonna damage his career.

Like your team OP, just not Parker. Think he's grossly overrated, unfortunately we don't have adequate options to replace yet, so he might have to stay for now.

posted on 2/9/11

I have seen barkley on two occasions, as you said, and i've already seen enough.

Forgive me, we DO hype up players, but on transfer fees and reputation! Just days before the world cup, we rejoiced in the imminent return of barry because we saw him as the best defensive midfielder in the world.

Hyping up players who are genuinely exciting is understandable. Spain has gone MAD for Munian, and we know they aren't exactly desperate for a new midfielder.

I don't know what your chelsea fan brother has been watching. Chelsea fans have got HUGE hopes for Mceachran.

Not in the same league as Wilshere? Maybe thats true because very few players are.

But he is certainly highly rated and had it not been for his injury, he would be highly involved for chelsea.

Just picking up on one point in the OP, I think Walcott plays better for England than Arsenal. His link up play with Rooney and the second striker has always been excellent from the wing. I wouldn't take him out.

The only point I want to make about the England performance is that this game highlights exactly why defensive midfielders aren't the answer to protecting the back 4. We were camped in our own half by a poor Bulgaria side despite the fact we had Parker and Barry there. The reason being is that whenever we won the ball, neither midfielder had the ability to hold possession or pass the ball (especially Barry). And while you keep giving the ball away, you'll invite waves of attacks which will eventually expose your back 4, which is exactly what was happening. Against a better attack we'll get punished unless we can have somebody in the middle who can hold onto the ball or provide some creativity without having to rely on wingers as a continuous outlet.

I think Jack Wilshere is that man. Good point though.

McEachran isn't anywhere near Chelsea's first team and from what I've heard and seen, there is zero chance of him being in the First XI at next summer's Euros. I can't believe we're even discussing it to be honest.

Barkley looks talented but at 17, it's far too early to be making rash judgements like these. Let him develop a couple more years at Everton and then see where we go from there.

Picking him for England could be the worst thing that ever happens to him, just like Walcott.

I stopped reading after the word 'What'

Did I miss much? Or was it the usual drivel about how bad a Liverpool player is?

Adam Johnson? Hardly get any game time at City. How the hell can you have a guy that plays as little as he does in the starting 11 for England. Walcott was very good today, Made a 50yard run taking out a few players and found a nice pass to Young who set up Rooney. As a whole he was good tonigh. Running at players and rarely giving away the ball.

I think Jack Wilshere is that man.

Agreed I'm actually waiting for the day when he cements his position in midfield to be honest.

I like that image, it reminds me of when Anderson looked liked he was in cement when West Brom's midfield were running past him!

Couldn't resist!

i think he pretty much has cemented it. its just hes injured at this time

adam johnson is average, he performs once every 5 games, he had no consistency of quality like DOWNING and his STATS proved for the past years in the top flight.

After reading your 'media slobbering over Suarez' rant, its not hard to see were your coming from.
Terrible article.
Must try harder.

...and his STATS proved...
---------------------------------------

Ah dear god this is what's wrong with modern day fans.

Football is a game not a maths exam. Have you ever thought about watching him instead??? He may play for city and it pains me to say it but he is a fantastic emerging talent, while Downing is a Boro reject who's managed to click for one season at Villa and shown he has a fraction of the technical ability Johnson already possesses on the ball.

posted on 3/9/11

Downing had before tonight, 28 England caps.
This is his first as a Liverpool player.
His stats in the premiership last season were amongst the best of any player in his position.
Indeed, he has started his Liverpool career brightly, and is unfortunate not to have score a couple of goals already.
Yet you state if it was not for his big money move to Liverpool, he wouldnt get a look in.
This is quite plainly nonsense, and I suspect you know this anyway.
Then reading back one of your earlier articles, you slate the medias reaction to Suarez, even though the vast majority of people admire his undoubted qualities as a player of the highest calibre.
My point is, if your going to write articles about england, please try and keep it measured and sensible, and try not to let your club allegiances get in the way of common sense, and maybe then you will be taken more seriously.

posted on 3/9/11

How ironic that you say, 'Ah dear god this is what's wrong with modern day fans', and then go on to show us exactly whats wrong with modern day fans, with your embittered 'Downing is a boro reject' nonsense.
Grow up.
