"Carrick helped bring about a much better possession game in Europe and with him in midfield we had our best ever European years, better than the years that included Keane etc.. 3 CL finals in 4 years including 4 semi's."

nothing to do with Ronaldo, Vidic, Rio, VDS, Evra, Rooney, Tevez, Scholes etc then?

"All I hear is Roma 2007."

That's because he scored 2 screamers. His role was never to score goals, it was to screen the defence and recycle the ball.

I know he's only been at the club for a decade but maybe you're not actually aware of what his role at the club has been.

So no examples?

Still waiting guys.

Theres a difference between a function and being a top player.

Carrick will stay as long as LVG is here.

posted on 18/5/16

And I'm fully aware of his role, and he's been a function nothing more or less.

posted on 18/5/16

I hope he stays for a few more years.

Don't know what you're expecting? A game where he scores loads of goals or saves penalties?

He screens the defence and is one of the best players we've ever had at doing that. he's been doing it consistently well for just under a decade.

he's close to leaving and good luck to him but people who now come out and say he wasn't that good are extremely unfair and misguided

when was scholes brought back at the age of 70? was that before carrick arrived? If not then if carrick was such a carrier why did scholes get recalled
----------------------------------------------------------------------

because Carrick was carrying the likes of Cleverley and Anderson. We needed someone else in there to help Carrick.

It's insane to find people even now underrate carrick.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I said he was a good player but utd fans have a tendency to overrate long serving players on this forum. So just wanted to know the details. He was a good player. But people calling him for an England place need to chill

Ok so he's been a function? He's been at the club for a long time so he's a good servant but to be in the top tier of United players he hasn't done enough.

He's not a leader and didnt influence games.

posted on 18/5/16

Give me examples of where Makelele shone? To most he didn't because like Carrick what he did wasn't that pleasing on the eye. Good positioning to stop attacks isn't entertaining. Having composure and the calmness to receive balls in tight space and move it on is also not that entertaining.

Do you have to be one of those to be in the top tier?

Luckily SAF was smart enough to bring Carrick in to help us get back to the top tier even if some fans don't understand what he does

Carricks best ever game for us was vs Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, I'm sure in the CL (?).

He bossed Essien and Lampard, spayed passes about and forced the issue, which has been my criticism of him over the years, a lack of physical authority.

I've always he's a solid 7/10 player, but that game he was a 10/10, and I only wish he did that on a consistent basis.

Yeah so he brought Scholes back?

You guys are missing the point. I understand what he does.

Just because you stay at 1 top club with great players doesn't make you great, most appreciate what he does, he just isn't a great player.

Just see makeleles game against bolton when chelsea won the league for when he shone.
Also in our 04-05 season against arsenal he was every where winning the ball and starting attacks. Most our away games actually in 04-05 he shone.

Yes, for a different role in the side to what Carrick does.

Meh classic ancelotti ineptitude, we lost every big game that season. I remember rooney being exceptional that night though

Thats my point, Scholes was withdrawn to do what Carrick should have been able to do which was control the midfield, he couldnt do it he struggled.

Look at him recently with no good CM next to him he struggles, no leadership, good passing range granted, but not a great player just a long serving player.

Some of you are getting as bad as Arsenal fans.

posted on 18/5/16

Ask any fan outside of our fan boys on here and they will tell you Carrick was at best a good player, certainly not a top player or even under that bracket.

-----------------------------------------------------------

He wasn't supposed to control the midfield. he was supposed to screen the defence and keep the tempo running a certain way - which he did.

Scholes was brought in to cover Cleverley's averageness and to help when Anderson was injured again

He was supposed to step up when Scholes retired and didnt so Scholes got brought back.

Cleverley and Anderson were carp we all know that, but I dont recall Carrick covering himself in glory during that time.

Carrick is decent in a 3 man midfield but in a 2 man he struggles as he has no legs. The screening thing fair enough he knows how to intercept, so does Lee Cattermole.

let's ask Rio Ferdinand...

“Reading the game, as a defensive midfielder, he was a defender’s dream,”

“I played behind him for so many years. I would tell him left or right, or up or back, and invariably he’d have been making that move anyway, but we had a great relationship in that sense and on the ball.
“His calmness, his assuredness, his authority with his passes, he was brilliant.”

Come on mate, an ex United player? He's not going to say he's average is he?

Their is a reason why we allow few shots on target against us.

And c'mon Rio Ferdinand? If you have to tell a pro footballer playing DM where to move then you should question your sanity and their ability.
