We lost two CBs (Ayala and Soto) but soon we signed a better CB in Coates. We were so happy with that and then all we wanted a striker and Ngog to leave. But the sale of Raul has changed our mood. As Didi said, it would have been a perferct trasfer window for us if we've kept Meireles.

It was still a very good one.

While I support my club, and their decisions to buy/sell players, I know I am not alone in being very disappointed in the sale of Raul. Irrespective of the fee paid - the value of money seems to have gone out the window as far as PL buys/sells are concerned - he has been sold to our nearest competitor for a relatively cheap price. An excellent article in the Telegraph yesterday, if accurate, paints KK and Damien in a very stark light. Meireles was effectively frozen out, having to put in the written transfer, despite no desire to leave the club at all, thereby forfeiting any loyalty bonus, Kenny having bought in Hendo and Adam, relegated Raul to the reserve's bench. My own opinion, said many times before for what its worth, is that Raul is "actual" as opposed to "potential", the categories that Hendo and Adam currently occupy. Time will tell. In the meantime, we have Shelvey to rely on. Great footballer? Automatic choice? In a word, no. Far from developed, yes, again, full of potential, but not there yet, if ever. Clearly, one of Kenny's favourites if he has in fact any, I think KK was instrumental in bringing him to the club, despite costing less than half of Wilson, has played far more games than him in a Red shirt. In KK I place my trust, I am a Red. Lets hope he's got this one right. YNWA JimmyTheRed

Given that Adam has spent as long as Raul in the Premier League and impressed more than Meireles last season I think it's a little unfair to Adam to say that but I'd agree with everything else you said.

Meireles was, sorry IS quality. If he wanted to go then fair enough, if he didnt then i am baffled aas to why he went, unless; Kenny has earmarked a youngster to step up, either Shelvey, Spearing or coady.

I like Shelvey, he has a great passing range and i do think there is a lot more to come from him, is he as ready as Meireles is?NO, but theres the rub, if Meireles stays tehn he plays and Shelvey etc lose playing time, if he leaves then the squad is slightly worse of but the youngsters get to play....KD has gone with the latter i feel. His choice, he gets paid big bucks to make strong decisions that are not always favourites with the supporters.

We've got both the player and young player of the Copa America now. Not bad.

why do people put shelvey down so easily?

It's not that difficult to be honest with you !

Both Didi and Got_, I thank you for your comments, clearly honestly said and well made in my view. We have swopped many views in the past, sometimes we agree, other times you are clearly wrong!!! (a joke OK?) The Telegraph article I refer to highlights the fact that many Reds would have been against the sale of Raul. I hope you have each noticed that many times I counselled against his sale, but that is now in the past. I will be interested in your views should you be able to find the article, its a real eye-opener as to the finances of the club, together with the cull - theres no other word for it - of peripheral players. We've apparently saved £17M in salaries alone. All that matter is that we as Reds continue to support the greatest team in the world. YNEFWA JimmyTheRed

Shelvey does have great potential and could turn into a great player if he keeps working hard, certainly has more to him than Spearing.

It's just that with Meireles and Aquilani you had experienced, quality players, so it's more of a losing quality players thing, more than Shelvey not being good enough. Shelvey could well be good enough but needs time.

I've heared the same thing over & over again.

Most recently - Babel, N'gog & Pacheco.

Sorry , not good enough in my opinion.

I will finish by saying this.....over 10yrs ago an established player called P Ince was let go and replaced by a realtive unknown called S Gerrard, the rest is as they say...history

Coates etc., the main difference between Shelvey and Spearing is that Jonjo does not have the football brain that Jay has. Thats not being disrespectull to Shelvey. Just watch Jay playing. He knows where he wants to be, he knows what he's going to do with the ball. He's constantly looking round, where his next ball is going. Equally in defence, he's there; Jonjo isn't. Please just watch their vision. No contest. Yes, Jay isn't a giant, but he's got the by far batter football brain. Again, no disrespect to Shelvey. JimmyTheRed

I'd have to disagree on this one, and I do think people's opinions on Spearing are like marmite!

I personally don't think he is that great. When you are in DM you are at the heart of the field so it's not that hard to pick up the ball and then pass it to the next player you see, and that is all Spearing does. I wouldn't call that having much of a football brain.

If you take someone like Makelele for example who made that position his own was because he really did have a football brain, he just read the opposition so well and on so many occasions broke up the play, without even needing to fly in with tackles. Mascherano did the same but with a bit more vengeance, and Lucas is beginning to do it now also, Spearing though just does the absolute basics, which is why he will never be a top player.

Shelvey may or may not become good, and does play in a more advanced position where a different kind of game is played, where creativity is really needed to unlock defences. Shelvey is a composed player on the ball from what I've seen but atm doesn't quite have the cutting passes and dictation on the ball required to make this position your own. One thing he does have though is time as he is young and can learn from the best in Gerrard.

-------------------------------------------------

Gerrard wasn't an unknown since he turned 13! I remember hearing the anecdote that when Houllier was brought on board he was told about this 14 year old kid in the youth team who was going to be the next great English midfielder. If they said anything like that about Shelvey I'd be mildly surprised.

Anyway even without Meireles I'm confident the squad is good enough to finish 4th, then we can buy whoever we want again! Mwuahahahahahahaha

I think Shelvey is a great talent. Just needs more experience and needs to calms down a bit.

FFS, he has been here a year, half of that under the incompetent guidance of hodgson and then the suffered an injury at the tail end of the year.
Prior to us signing him, chelsea had a £3.5m bid turned down for him and contrary to popular belief, he was very highly regarded at youth level.
The kid has all the ability to become a top player, but some fans are so impatient and believe he should have come straight from charlton and performed like gerrard week in week out. get a grip!

Exactly! He's still young and has a lot of potential, so I'm sure Kenny give him a chance!

Shelvey...the next.....errr...Shelvey!!! And thats exactly as it should be!!!

He will be a top player, just watch him. He plays great forward passes, good on the ball and intelligent play. It maybe why Meireles was sold!!

It will be the only reason he was allowed to go. everyone else who left the squad and left a "need" was replaced, including ngog on the last day.
The meireles deal was always going to happen and to be honest, he was not getting in the team now and thats without gerrard coming back.
Shelvey will make his mark this season, but if meireles stayed we would be stopping the development of a top 19 year old in favour of a 28 year old who would only make the bench
