amazing what scraping a win against a pub Welsh team can do to people.

Tonight was quite a rotten performance from Germany - a consistent theme since they won the World Cup. I'd bet good money on England to beat the team I saw out there.

Maybe in a group game, we'd bottle it in a knock out game no doubt if we were actually in a position to beat them.

That Spain side of 2008 ended up becoming one of the best in the modern era so it might be slightly premature to think England could ever reach those levels.

However I agree with the gist of your article - this side could achieve something special. With the three strikers we have, all with something different England can definitely go far. However the one thing holding us back I fear is the manager who is nothing short of a joke. The fact that it has taken him one and a half games to get the combination right is shocking.

Wasn't even thinking about that win when I typed this. I was thinking more of the fact the top teams look quite mediocre and way off the level of their more successful sides.

No, I don't think England could reach those levels. They could, but it's highly unlikely. I cited them as an example of a team who shook off a reputation to achieve great success. England's past flopping doesn't condemn England to be eternal flops.

The top teams will start putting in better performances as the tournament goes on. England will do well to scrape into the quarter finals. People point to the strike force, we still have an average midfield and a dodgy defence.

Like the OP says there are no great sides in this tourney. England on paper are not really much worse in some departments than anyone else but something strange happens to them in the knockout round.

Two knockout round wins in all comps since Euro 96.

I think England will get an easyish draw in the next round. If they win that they might get some confidence. Who knows after that but with Rooney in midfield and Cahill in defence I think class will tell eventually.

I still think Belgium will surprise a few people.

Whilst not a fantastic performance, England should be given credit for today's win, it's never easy when a team parks the bus, no matter what level of football it's at

Nothing to do with history; we're just not quite good enough, sadly, especially at the back. But we're better than a lot of people say. I said quarters at the start and I'm sticking with that. Maybe one further.

Wales are a better team than many give them credit for as well. They picked up 4 points vs Belgium in qualifiers after all. We're still a long way behind the likes of Italy, Germany, France and Spain though.

Quite fancy Croatia for some reason. Think they'll go far into the tournament.

Re. England, just have to hope Roy sticks with Vardy and Sturridge now. Think todays match was never likely to be a classic, just about getting the win. Which they did.

Those assumptions are made based on history though. It won't be that big a shock for England to beat any of the fancied boys. Their defence, which you think is dodgy is one of the best in the competition. Their midfield isn;t the greatest, but it's solid enough not to get overrun.

I don't think England are a long way away from any of those sides. International football isn't like CL football. There are no Barcelonas or Real Madrids.

It's just a bunch of sides with players thrown together with inferior players than they're used to at club level. No international side is miles better than England. That doesn't mean England are world class. More that no international side is world class. Germany are one of the worst defending champions I've seen.

-----------------------------------------

Italy arrived this tournament with one of their worst ever squads (their worst in my lifetime). Spain and Germany are miles off their peak level. It's not just a question of form, but key shortcomings in their team. France have a hell of a lot to prove considering their mediocrity since the end of the Zidane era.

Croatia might just be the best team I've seen in the tournament at the moment, though that in turn leads to Turkey being the worst team I've seen.
