I assume Dundee United's contribution to Palestinian charities is much more say £1-£2 per attendee (average attendance)?

Not to mention the hard to put a figure on extra publicity the actions of Celtic fans has generated for Palestine.....
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Why should we be donating to Palestine?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well if you are going to criticise others for their contributions being low I assumed you and other Dundee supporters must have raised a greater amount for Palestine.....
----------------------------------------------------------------------

As I asked, why should we raise money for Palestine?

We have no reason to.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Never said you did.

But it is wrong to sarcastically criticise them for only raising 70p per attendee when your club has raised 0p per attendee for this good cause.

Its like me sarcastically commenting on someone putting 'only' a pound in a charity box then walking past the thing without putting a penny in.

No it's not like that at all.

Firstly as pointed out we as a support have donated to local charities to help the poor in our community attend games - both in terms of providing season tickets and also buying tickets for big matches, including cup finals.

Secondly I don't know the political views of my fellow supporters - we're a football club, not a political organisation. Neither you nor I have any idea how much supporters of Dundee United have contributed to Palestinian causes.

Thirdly - in your example the person scoffs (JFK, that's for you) at the money put in while putting nothing in himself. However you have no idea what charitable donations that person makes elsewhere. The Palestinian cause is no greater than a whole host of causes across the world, all of which requires money.

Fourthly - I was just winding them up about the 70p bit because that's kinda what we do up here. I would very much hope they all know that and I would say that the reaction given shows they know that.

1stly,

and If Celtic fans scoffed at those contributions whilst their contributions for the same project were either less or non existent I would similarly disagree with them.

2ndly

Surely that point applies straight back to you, you have no idea how much Celtic fans contribute towards Palestinian causes, they contributed 70p per attendee as a group (celtic football fans) afaik your fans have not done similar, so your criticism is highly unjustified.

3rdly

No it isn't but It is almost certainly a better cause than at least some of the local charities your own club gives to.

4thly...

Fair enough, my bad!

Then fair play, considering the suffering that goes on in Palestine there must be some incredible local charities up that way.

There are people in my city, adults and children, who don't get something to eat every day.

The poverty here is very real and, while I have every sympathy with the people of Palestine who suffer horrors regularly, hungry children on my doorstep are far more visible and real for me. I'm proud of my contributions to those charities.

I should probably add locality isn't a factor for me personally, though I understand that is different for a lot of people.

So as a random example, giving a poor kid in a relatively wealthy country which I live in (or even the town or street I live in) a toy say is less vital (or less of a good cause) than giving a starving child in another country some food.

Ahh cross posted that last one Ivan sorry about that.

It somewhat addresses what you wrote but then somewhat doesn't. I can understand that to a lot of people problems closer to them are a lot more important than those further afield.

Its not something I believe personally but its a very widely held viewpoint so nothing I can really call you out on.

It means more to you and that is great Curly but would you really argue with someone living in, say Colombia that it was a better cause than giving money to Palestinian charities?

Well done for that though, genuinely! (this still almost looks sarcastic despite my best attempts, it isn't)

I think the thing is where does it stop?

You say the Palestine charities deserve the money more, but then what about charities in other war torn countries? Are they more deserving?

Are the slums in India more deserving? Or the barrios in South America?

Who decides which charity deserves it the most?

Should I stop putting money into the Guide Dogs for the Blind tin? Should I tell the old biddy collecting that her charity isn't deserving?
