One of Fergie's best buys. I remember people gawking at the 16 million we paid then for his services.
A good and faithful servant. He will certainly be remembered.
Wow can't believe it's ten years.
For the money you paid a bargain.

I wonder how much of that cautious nature was his style, or instructions from the manager?
When he was alongside Scholes, he may well have been instructed to get the ball across to him unless something obvious was on (which led to the crab nickname).
Though I agree that he never fully stepped up once Scholes moved on and Carrick became the main man in CM.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is exactly my point Ji.
Can Carrick play adventurous balls through the lines, can he get up the pitch to support attacks, can he shoot? Of course he can. We know this.
In Fergie's later years did he do those things? Less and less frequently. He won the ball, kept the ball, played simple passes and kept us ticking over in possession, directing recycling across the pitch.
Did this dependable and intelligent player take it on himself to change his game in this way or was he acting under direct instruction of the manager?

Yep, it is the same reason I am giving the likes of Fellaini, MS etc a blank slate under José.
So many people have slated LvG and Moyes (rightly) yet wont entertain the idea that players who were poor under those managers can take onboard fresh ideas and change the way they player.
Players will often taper their desire to try to do something attacking, but risky, especially under a manager like LvG and, take an extent, SAF in his later years.
Early signs with José are that he is allowing players to express themselves. We might even see Carrick hitting a few 30 yarders!

Very good player but I think he's become somewhat overrate by a lot of people on here because it's the cool thing to do.
-------------------
Is it not just possible that other people rate him differently than you do and "coolness" doesn't even cross their minds?
________________
Actually I think he has a point tbf. It has been fashionable on here to overrate Carrick for some time imo...It's why you get arrogant comments like "you don't understand football if you don't rate Carrick" or "most fans don't appreciate what he does".
Etc etc etc. These types of comments have gone hand in hand with Carrick for many years. I.e. those who rate him most highly have always tried to make out like they have some sort of monopoly on "football knowledge"...that they "see what others don't". Which is bollox of course!
He has been a great player for us in general but not for many years now imo. As for his so-called wonderful passes, it's been a while since we have seen any on a regular basis. That's why people still go on about the Roma match....ten years ago.
At his peak he was a great player but, like Rooney, his peak was a very long time ago.

He wasn't great last season but he was one of our best players in LVGs first season and was our player of the season in SAFs final year.
People day its fashionable to overrate Carrick but it seems its more fashionable to say he's been poor for years now when it's not the case at all.

There are definitely people who can't read the midfield well though.. and unless a hollywood pass or goal is scored, it passes them by... My uncle is a perfect example... He screams at a player if he passes it back or sideways, even though I can see exactly why he has done that and it was a progressive move. Or he will come out of the stadium and moan about someone like Carrick, even though I know that he has controlled the pace and worked the ball well.
OT is full of people like my uncle!

Perhaps. My point is that comments like that point to a certain self[-proclaimed elitism whereby only the really clever people can see/appreciate what Carrick does. Or, if you will, the "cool" people.......
Central midfield was always my best position so I laugh at the notion that it's a position I can't understand! I have always maintained that it is the most important position on the pitch...
If Carrick's backwards and sideways passing are the true measure of his genius then why do people still make up stories about his magnificent range of passing that we never see?
And why do people still go on about the Roma match whenever a thread about Carrick comes up? Fyi, Pogba was 13 years old back then!
The above poster is a perfect example of someone who still doesn't get what Carrick is there to do and who has done it very well.
I could argue that it is just as elitist to buck this so called trend and dismiss their views simply because they don't match yours
Anyway, it's all just opinions... I really like what he has done in a red shirt... Hopefully we will get to see a bit more under José too.

hardly the point I was making...if you recall how this debated started...
In a nutshell: loyal servant and great player.
Played within himself and ipso facto; somewhat unfulfilled.
Peak , certainly elapsed a while back.
"n Fergie's later years did he do those things? Less and less frequently."
This is my issue with him, he never did it frequently at all.
When he did he was praised by Fergie, team mates and fans, so I'm so sure it was something he was encouraged to avoid.
Although once Fergie did say he was annoyed at him scoring vs Fulham because he was too far up the pitch

I don't really get the point
Pretty much every difference of opinion on here is someone thinking they know better, or seeing something that the other person doesn't.
The only think I disagree with is that people are doing it to be cool.
If only he was 10 years younger, or even 5.
Great player for us and top man.
Think he lacks self belief and that's why he was a rung below being top top class. He wasn't as slow as people made out just rarely stretched his legs when going forwards. Rarely shot and does have a great shot.
I don't really get the point
