List could be endless, but whittling it down to just a handful:

Own: Di Stefano & Puskas
Other: Pelé, Cruyff, Best

These are players I've seen loose footage of, of course, and some I even saw on TV live, but was too young to fully understand and appreciate the game.

From a Liverpool point of view, Dalglish and Souness. I was born in 88 so never got to see those 2 in their prime.

Obvious candidates, Pele, Maradona and Best. The trio were geniuses

You will see many a Liverpool fan vote for Stevie as Liverpool's best ever player. IMO both these two were superior players.

As a side note to Manchester United fans do you think if the Babes had not got on that plane, would that now famous telegram have still been written? “Boss, I think I've found you a genius

Bob Bishop had been a United youth scout for almost a decade before finding Best... Dont think the crash would have impacted that at all

For Chelsea, Osgood

For anyone it has to be Pele. Eusebio too

Would love to have seen Maradona live in his pomp, not just the TV, and also in this era of protected forwards. He would have been unstoppable

Different debate about eras, but for me that late 80s and early 90s period was the hardest for forwards due to increased defensive discipline and a 'rustic' approach to tackling.

On the flipside, can you imagine a tank of a a player like Wanyama given carte blanche back in those days?

Probably Pele... Saw best albeit in friendlies and testimonials while in his mid 30s

If you take out the saw on tv bit... Then Zico, Socrates, Maradona... Saw them on tv but would rather have saw them live

George Best. He's so highly rated that I just can't help but think he's massively overrated - I'd like to have seen him play so I can judge for myself.

The problem is he would need to be a totally different personality.... Better fitness etc, drug tests.... He'd either be banned for life or unstoppable

I do not think he would even need to be that fit to be honest . Great balance, skill, low centre of gravity, upper body strength.....good in the air . Imagine if you could barely touch him wihout giving a foul away too?

It would be a fine sight to see for the few years until his lifetime ban

Not talking about best ever, but personally from 'round about those days I greatly enjoyed watching both Barnes and Beardsley. For some reason I remember them better than the others, maybe their pomp was just that little bit later.

For those who never saw him, Edin's suggestion of M. Laudrup is a good shout, such a silky style of play, so easy on the eye. There's a long youtube video out there focussed solely on his passing. Superb.

Beardsley was a lovely player.

Best I've seen apart from Henry is Dalglish. Great player.

Best I'd have liked to have seen are obviously Pele and Maradona and from an Arsenal perspective Liam Brady

A lot of the youngsters will only remember fat past oit Gazza too

He was mate as was Hoddle from your boys (Hoddle was a bit soft though)

Just a bit too young to appreciate Hoddle myself, I was i single digits when he left.

Those of you who never saw the great Ajax team of the 70's, Johan Cruyff.

3 players I always wish I could have seen live:

1) George Best
2) Maradona
3) Zidane

Whilst on the subject, the best performances I've seen from any player;
1) Fat Ronaldo (scored 3 at OT)
2) Skinnier Ronaldo (a few times)
3) Kaka (at OT)

Agree with a lot of the suggestions thrown out in this thread so far but I'm going to go with nne from leftfield who I don't think many will have heard, or at least considered; Florian Albert from the last great Hungarian side of 1966.

I've seen the full 90 minutes of their group game against Brazil at the 1966 world cup (when Brazil came to England as holders) and he simply tore them limb from limb in a display which saw him run the show from start to finish. His effortless gliding along them turf both with ball at feet and without was like a prime Kaka, floating on the top of quick sand as others around him struggled to gain any kind of traction. His appreciation of time and space made it seem like he forever had all the time in the world ala Juan Riquleme in his pomp and his all round athleticism made him look like something from a different era with a grace and a function like something from another time.

Watch this and tell me he doesn't belong from another time?

Another I'd have really like to have seen with my own eyes was Raymond Kopa. The number 10 who pretty much orchastrated Just Fontaine's quite frankly ridiculous goal scoring exploits at the 1958 world cup and the man who ably complimented and provided the creative fulchrum by which Puskas and Di Steffano pivoted around in those late 50's Real Madrid sides. An absolute magician by all accounts and another who's appreciation of tie and space was far beyond those of his era. Gorgeous player.
