posted on 15/12/16

But yeah the article doesn't tell the whole story, though.

As in the case of Sol and Rio who played for shiiiiiit teams like Spurs, Pompey, West Ham, Leeds and QPR.

How is after the beneficiary of players around him?

None of his defensive team mates make the list. He was Hyypias replacement really.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It basically means the OP didn't see Agger play that much and made an assumption based on him playing against Chelsea twice a season and MOTD highlights.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So you think he was in the top ten in PL history?

I do very much remember the last time he played Chelsea tho, Willian kept making a total mug of him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Which players did Agger benefit from having around him and why didn't they make the top 10?

Bet Alderweireld has a fairly good record.

Is there any way to see these stats for current players?

Sami

One of the most underrated playes in PL history and one of the best value for money sognings, the perfect centre back.

Not perfect, he couldn't finnish.

Interestingly if you actually show how many clean sheets they each got then the table looks somewhat different.

1. John Terry – 488 appearances, 215 clean sheets
2. Sami Hyypia – 318 appearances, 122 clean sheets
3. Tony Adams – 255 appearances, 115 clean sheets
4. Gary Pallister – 261 appearances, 104 clean sheets
5. Nemanja Vidic – 211 appearances, 95 clean sheets
6. Daniel Agger – 175 appearances, 72 clean sheets
7. Ricardo Carvalho – 135 appearances, 66 clean sheets
8. David May – 158 appearances, 63 clean sheets
9. Steve Bruce – 148 appearances, 61 clean sheets
10. Paulo Ferreira – 141 appearances, 55 clean sheets

The old adage that you can make stats say what you want still rings true.

Hyypia, Arbeloa, Rafa as manager (not as great as you lot say he is, but when he gets his tactics right his teams are hard to break down), Reina, Mascherano protecting him.

Yep it's takes into account periods where top defenders either played for inferior clubs or the club were in a poor period. Carvalho pretty much only played at Chelsea when they were a top side.

Terry's is impressive because he played in the same era as carvalho but also far lesser Chelsea sides with far weaker defences.

Even Skrtel was quite good pre Brendan.

Nonsense, his goal v Juve in 05

Scored multipe top class headers too.

.............

I think they had one season where they only conceded 16 goals or something daft like that.

Hyypia was definitely underrated.

Big Sami was a colossal for us.

300 games and you could count his mistakes on one hand.

He also chipped in with 35 goals during his time at the club.

Gerrard, Hamman, Alonso and Garcia get a lot of credit for the CL win in 05 but Big Sami was as vital as anyone.

Whatever you think about JT, that record is immense. Best CB of the premier league era for sure (and there has been a lot of competition).

Obviously the whole team contributes but when you're shutting out teams in almost half of games, you win leagues.

You could argue Terry and Gallas was even better. I think in 05/06 they played together in the centre 20 times and conceded once

Apparently part of the reason Gallas kicked up a stink and fecked off to Arsenal was he felt he deserved to play ahead of Ricky that season.

How many times did Agger play CB with Hyppia? He also played a full 5 seasons for Liverpool after Hyppia left. Arbeloa also left Liverpool in 2009. Reina was at Liverpool until 2013/14.

Agger was a much better defender than Skrtel.

Terry's consistency is just unreal, and how he always battled back when he had to.

If he was a nice lad like say Southgate he'd be talked about in even greater terms, top class defender.
