I would be against hanging, the chair, racism, sectarianism, homophobia, bigotry, fundamentalism in religion, bullying, drug and alcohol abuse, oppression of women, children, disabled, minority groups, and folk such as Blair and Hilary getting us into wars in mainly Muslim lands!
I am also funny, friendly, easy going, approachable and a real team player...do I get the job, pal?
I do have some radical or controversial views, depending on the audience, but hey, am a nice guy at heart.
Always say hello to aul folk too!
Hate the papish thoughπ

Dave, fascinating post about Chinese women. I went clubbing a couple of times with my sister when she lived in Shanghai, and I can bear witness to how deferentially the women there were treated, at least on the night scene.
That same trip, travelling out in rural China I met an English-speaking guy (pretty hard to come by in many parts), and he explained the one-child policy, its application, and its consequences on family life in rural areas and why that had so seriously affected both first, but more especially second-born girls:
He said the lack of pensions meant that in rural China the only effective way of guaranteeing a degree of wellbeing when you were too old to work was to have your children look after you.
He explained that the tradition when you married was for husband and wife to set up wherever the man lived (which would often mean a different town, village or remote farmhouse), and that they would typically look after the aged parents of the husband, but not so of the woman's parents.
The one-child policy did actually allow a second child to be had if your first was a girl, but any children thereafter were subject to a very heavy tax every year that most peasants couldn't afford.
Some families would keep children in secret, but if they were reported or found out by party officials, the police would come round and, as payment for outstaanding taxes, confiscate anything whatsoever of value thaat the family might hold - this could include bed matresses (if any), electrical appliances, even cooking pots or utensils.
The penalties for exceeding the child quota were so harsh, and the prospect of facing an old age of starvation and disease, was the main driving factor that led many people to kill newborn girls.
Nothing you can say makes it sound any less monstrous a thing to do, but I'd like to know how many Westerners wouldn't actually have acted the same way if they'd been brought up in the same kind of sociocultural circumstances. It's hardly as if we Europeans haven't proved capable of doing some pretty horrific things in the not-so-distant past.
On a separate note regarding equality, one of the things that caught my attention out in the rural areas was the amount of women doing heavy duty jobs, such as road maintenance/building, though I can't say whether the ones I saw were regular workers or perhaps prison work gangs, which I think at least used to be relatively common out there.
Addendum:
This was early-mid 00s. I think the one-child policy was still in force but had already been relaxed at least in the cities by that time.

As demonstrated previously, despite acknowledging (or being made aware) you were misinformed/incorrect on a topic, it doesn’t seem to prevent you, (at a later date) repeating the same argument(s).
I doubt Brightdave’s (excellent btw) posts on China will do anything to change your entrenched opinions.
In regard to the local posts, you asked me what I thought of “the Provo party getting a huge vote” A blatantly prejudiced question.
The election was not triggered due to the Northern Bank robbery. Which was committed over thirteen years ago. Nor was it called because some ex-paramilitaries are now in government. And have been for decades.
You also seem to forget under the terms of the GFA early release of paramilitary prisoners was universally supported, and those (from both sides) who were involved in paramilitary activities came to the table to negotiate, and some entered politics. From all sides of the community.
Yet you continue to refer to SF as "the Provo party." Time to move on.
The correlation you have raised between a host of diverse and complex issues, (Brexit/Trump/Corbyn etc etc) are quite frankly absurd. Scattergun. But not untypical.
“Opposing brexit you get Brussels...hmmm?” What does this even mean?
I don’t “hate” Brexit but have done enough research to understand it’s consequences. And relying on blind faith is not going to resolve.

This is common in lots of places. In the hill tribes of northern Thailand the wives did all the farm work while the men sat inside smoking opium.
This was in no way a punishment for the women either - just business as usual for them.
Upon further reading it appears to be due to disgruntled whitehall officials who want to provoke a negative reaction to a commonwealth deal, very strange.

Oh yeah, I know farm work is. In most parts of the world it's the women who work the fields ... that is, until there's enough money to bring in tractors and other mechanical toys, at which point the men take over.
But as far as construction work goes, I was surprised to see women doing it. Come to think of it though, it was very much the pick-and-shovel variety. Construction sites in Shanghai as I remember were the men's business.
