I don't know, he gets mocked on a regular basis by the media, opposition fans and his own fans. But on the other hand you've got others who seem to think he's blameless for our failings, that he's still a legendary figure and irreplaceable.
Has he been over-rated? To some yes to others no.
Good and timely article.I don't think Arsene is overrated .Most managers could only dream of achieving what he has achieved at this club ,both on and off the pitch. I do however think it's time for him to go . Despite the couple of cup wins in recent years I think the team has stagnated in real terms .Season after season we fall short of the main prizes while consistently finishing in the top four .The clubs non football activities seem to be on an upward trajectory which is all well and good, but, clubs don't win cups for accountancy.Yes we have a great stadium with loads of revenue but our team on the pitch is often found wanting
3 titles and 6 FA Cups is more than most clubs have achieved in their entire history.
To put it into context, we had only won 3 league titles in the 40 years prior to Wenger coming, and 6 FA Cups in the 110 years before he arrived.
I remember the days when we were told by goober fans that Arsenal were set to dominate the world when their stadium was paid off and that they'd done things the proper way. Megalols right now.
I dont think hes over rated, he has had some marvelous achievements. No one else will ever be able to be the first manager to lead a team to be the first to go a Premier League season undefeated (I know it happened first a very long time ago, but modern football is very different and more competitive). He also maintained top 4 during the move to the Emirates.
But, we are now seeing a failure to move forward at a time when fans have become fed up with paying the highest ticket prices for little success.
I'm not sure he is totally to blame, the communications that come out of the club are foggy and unclear. If they were honest with the fans about the state of the club. But the fact remains that we see mistakes by Wenger on a regular basis that even the averge armchair fan can see. My opinion of his biggest mistake recently is the constantly chop and change the team and position of players. Some of this is forcd by injuries but things like resting Bellerin against Watford when he should have been fresh, moving Sanchez to accomodate Giroud and then moving him back again for the biggest game in a while with little chance for the team to get used to the change. Even if it makes 1% difference, that could have been the difference in conceding the first goal, or a chance for us leading to a goal.
So Wenger has to go.
he was a top manager. Never great. To be great manager you have to defend a league title, and win a major European trophy, in my opinion.
Having said that, he deserves respect. Being manager of a big club like Arsenal for so long is no easy feat. It will be difficult to replace him.

You seem to have the misconception that the stadium is paid off. It isn't
I think he's rated about right. He did an excellent job back in the day with the foundations already in place through a solid back line of players. Most acknowledge this while acknowledging that he is no longer as good as he was, and behind some of the top managers in the game. It's not as if anyone rates him on a par with Fergie, Pep or Mourinho.

So the stadium is holding you back right now..?
To an extent, yes. When you owe $300m you cannot be reckless.
But you have money to spend.
Not to the extent the likes of Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea have though.
As you said, once the stadium is paid off....
The game has simply passes Wenger by. His superior scouting network (particularly the French market) and the better conditioning of our players when he arrived was huge for us. It helped that he inherited a solid spine, especially tthe back 5, augmented later by the development of Ashley Cole and signing of Campbell.
Since then, his vulnerabilities have been exposed. Never been able to build a similarly stout defence. Teams have greatly expanded their scouting networks. But most of all, Wenger has NEVER been a great tactician. Even at his best, it was never his strength. Our utter mediocrity in Europe, even with some truly great teams, was proof.
Far as I'm concerned, the guy has done his legacy massive damage since he decided to sit tight like a tin-pot dictator. Wenger could have left this club as our greatest ever manager if he left since around 2011. As it stands, I rate Chapman comfortably ahead, and will argue Graham accomplished more relative to expectations. The guy has to overcome his massive ego and JUST GO.
Think you've been sold a lie DJ
The one where you can't afford to compete with the big boys so just be happy with 4th place because we're punching well above our weight...

Arsenal fans may be in for a shock though. A new manager doesn't mean instant success
------------------------------------------
Who has said this though? Don't think many reasonable people expect immediate success. A new manager would need to be given time and supported in the transfer market. But a new direction is certainly needed. This cycle needs to be broken and the risk of failure is still a risk worth taking. The only risk unacceptable at this point is the risk of relegation, and even my teenage sister who has never watched a match couldn't manage this team to relegation.
