If Defoe wouldn't mind being a 3rd or 4th choice striker then sure, because I'd want to see us bring in some better quality in that position first.

Carrick is a holding midfielder and we are alright in that department. If we were to get anyone from United with experience who could add depth to our midfield then maybe Mata.

Berbatov still looking for a club

In all seriousness I actually wouldn't mind them for a bit of experience to come on here and there but it's not the poch way so not worth even thinking about it.

I'd take both to add to the squad. Types of player that could help us in the CL.

This!!

Although I've always felt we let Defoe go too soon.

I'd have liked Defoe at Liverpool in his prime, clinical finisher and quick!

They were good players for us several years ago but that ship has sailed. Signing them would be for nostalgia and nothing else.

I would take both, handy back up players especially for the domestic cups.

Carrick would be a good mentor for Winks and if trying to hold on to a game, he would be good to bring on as he can retain the ball and keep posssesion.

Defoe is still scoring fairly often in a poor Sunderland team, as a back up choice for free we can't go wrong really, given half a chance you know he will put the ball in the back of the net.

These two would free up funds to improve other areas as central midfield and up top isn't a massive priority at the moment.

You honestly believe that someone who's as hungry as Defoe to play and score goals to stay in the England squad will join us for cup games?

Carroll has stated if he doesn't stay at United he'll probably retire.
