There's not one English player that I think we should be looking at. Most are overated, and expensive. We will get superior and cheaper alternatives abroad.
Certainly not dier or Barkley.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
i think sometimes the english premium is more a PL-tested premium, eg torres went for a stupid amount because he knew the PL.
but some foreign buys do illustrate that a quality player abroad is not always going to thrive in the PL, at least not immediately (bravo, pogba, mkhi, lamela etc).
but of the english players around now not many excite me too much, and for sure it would cost a king's ransom to buy any of the spurs lads for instance (some of whom are top quality).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Disagree, it's down to the complete overhype young English talent get. Look at Shaw, a 10m player at best, left footed and with a bit of pace (that he does nothing with), 30m. Don't even get me started on stones.
Don't even get me started on stones.
..............
Even Robb has now come round to realizing that Stones is not a good defender.
18 months after the rest of us, mind.

on the flip side if united's scouts could do a better job, they could have bought rose, alli, dier, walker, clyne, sterling (from qpr), and stones (from barnsley) for a grand total of c. £35m.
as opposed to spending £50m on shaw, zaha, and nick powell.
whether delle alli is more overhyped than coutinho, or martial, i don't really know...not sure i'd want to pay £100m to find out, but it would have been nice to pay £5m to take a peek.
Bang on Don, I don't believe we employ scouts anymore to be fair.

A perfect replacement for Wazza, then.
By the way guys I wasn't saying we should go all out for Barkley but if there was the opportunity to get him at a cut price deal with Rooney going the opposite way I could think of worse deals.
Process
Any deal we do with Everton must have a clause in it that says they will take Groot back, as well.

let's be honest, any deal involving rooney going in the opposite direction sounds good to most of us.
but i'm with you on barkley, even if just as a squad member who can add a bit of urgency from the bench.

Still wouldn't take it
I would however swap Fellaini, lingard and Rooney for Lukaku however
I'd rather keep felani than have Barkley
Rose was a winger. And to be honest I don't rate him and Walker highly. They play well in a system that helps. Alli was touted as an up coming player belief joining Spurs, but how many have been that? Ramsey, Bale, Zaha are others. Remember, we bought Powell? Sometimes those work out and sometimes they don't. And didn't Cylne reject us? I think it was twice he rejected us.
It's all well saying we should have signed this or that, but when we have (Zaha and Powell to name two) and they haven't worked out, there are fans who then all to sign established stars.
30-40m for Barkley, 50m for stones and 3 for Shaw are exactly why we should avoid English flavour of the months. Rip off city for substandard product.
Pogba was a bigger mistake than Stones.
Pogba was a horrendous rip off...but unlike the other players mentioned he does have decent ability, so some of the hype surrounding him, a bit of it, is justified. It's not with the English contingent.
