Lingard wasnt a wing back. He didn't even go in our half.
He was off the left shoulder of Rashford for most of his time.
I think what has confused you is that Valencia had no one to mark and stayed out wide a lot.

Joes gave a much different explanation on the ESPN U pre match.
He said to the very attracive blonde that he would change his starting 11 in the second half and go to a back three as well.
If you watched Jones and Mike they were rarely apart in the centre. Jones only ventured to the right side when Valencia attacked.
When LA rarely attacked Tony V dropped back into his normal position.
In the second half as a back three they got behind us way too much imo which I think Jose was very concerned about.
Not digging Memphis.
Just staggered you think Lingard was playing wing back.

I did watch. Smalling was quite clearly the most central of the three and Jones and Blind were playing like right and left centre-halves when we were defending. The back three shuffled across depending what side LA Galaxy were attacking down. When we had the ball, Jones and Blind went wider to offer a passing option for Smalling.
Whoa, whoa, whoa,I thought Smalling and Jones were upfront ?
352 was played in both halves, only difference was in execution
-the question for me is did we play better in the first half because we had better players or because la galaxy had poorer players. The obvious answer is la had poorer players in the 1st half.
I was going to type more about my observations but at this point it is pointless imo
