well done Sporting CP
they seem to win league titles once every ~ 20 years these days
I checked back on the 2013-14 Liga season, because I had the lingering recollection of all of them dropping points all over the place in the run in.
I thought it had been bad, but checking the results, it was arguably worse than this year!
From week 24 onwards, only twice did all three teams pick up the 3 points. Crazier still is that they were most probably the best sides in Europe that year!
Barca bottle job that year as well.
Yeah, but all three were woeful in the run in against opponents.
Madrid and Atleti both drew two and lost one. Barça drew three.
Barça-Atleti was the only game out of those nine to featuring an opponent in the European places, i.e. top seven.
That’s interesting - who were the respective managers then? Ancelotti and Tito?
Yep.
Weeks 23 and 24 both ended with a 3-way tie at the top. That was actually the last time Barça led in the table.
In week 35, they trailed 2-0 in the second half at Villarreal and all were but out of the running. Lose that game, and they'd have been 7 points adrift with 3 games to go ...
and Gabriel and Musacchio went and scored two facking own goals!
And they all ended up near 90 points. Brutal title race.
I can’t handle that Pep article anymore, Edin. I haven’t got the energy to argue with people that think creating one of the most dominant football teams of all time, in three different countries, is to be expected.
I cannot wait for him to fack off. City will start to struggle to put together consistently dominant seasons again.
It’s full of so much conjecture and people still sleep on how insanely good a job Pep did with Barca
Well yeah because obviously building them into gratest team of all time was expected.

What Simeone did that season considering Atleti's resources was nothing short of amazing.
They also went the entire Champions League unbeaten... until extra time of the final.
Yeah it really was. I think it’ll still be bloody impressive if they win it again, though not quite as comparable given the relative weakness of Barca and Madrid.
It’s nice to see a manager have that kind of longevity
Yeah, this one's a lot less of a surprise considering the mess Madrid and Barça have been in for a couple of years now.
I'd go as far as saying it's arguably less of a surprise than Madrid winning it last season. Quite a few people actually had Atleti down as favourites this season, whereas not many would've put their money on Madrid last year after their disastrous showing the year before.
Daz, did you notice in the Villareal-Celta highlights how it was raining one minute, sunny the next, and an absolute deluge at the end of the game. Also, aside from the ref being absolutely hilarious, that head on collision shocking, and that red-not-red-card tackle by Araujo was one of the weirdest challenges I can remember. It all felt so surreal.
That was a definite red - can’t believe it got overturned
Yeah and especially at Atleti, who were renowned for sacking managers.
ioag, yeah they were the favourites for many coming into the season after signing Suarez. Hopefully they fack it up.
Simeone/Suarez delenda est.
Yeah it was fantastic.
Felt like I was watching Goal 4.
What's goal 4?
Edin, thing is the lunge was so damn odd that I reckon it confused the ref.
I was also a bit at odds with the Asenjo penalty, even that was odd. Hugo Mallo - the player he collided with - charging full pelt into the heart of the 6-yard box to contest a corner ... all 5ft 6in of him!
The ball gets cleared at the near post, about 3 yards from the two players, Asenjo punches into thin air (remember he's defending his box) and he and Mallo smash into each other.
Penalty and yellow card. How does that work?
A football film I’m wishing to be made. Don’t worry, it was too lowbrow for you.
Atleti up next.
Home to R Sociedad tonight. Betis and Villarreal both in close pursuit of la Real, both play relegation strugglers tomorrow.
Atleti dropping points tonight would set the stage perfectly for Madrid to drop points in Granada.
Any of you lot been in Granada, by the way? Beautiful place.
Mallorca, Minorca, Barcelona and Malaga are the only places I’ve been
Think I’d like to go Bilbao or Seville next
As much as it pains me to admit, Seville is pretty stunning.
While you're there, you could pop down do Cádiz. It's just over an hour away, and it's a grate place.
No I haven’t. Though funnily enough, I was watching a cookery/travel programme the other day and they’re in Granada, looks grate. Only been to Barcelona and Valencia. Cordoba is the place in Spain I’d like to go to next. May take a trip down to Granada, and maybe Sevilla at the same time. I want to check out Muslim Spain basically.
Me and my mates were all gonna go to Cordoba a few years ago, but somehow plans changed and we ended up going to Marseille. Facking poured it down the whole time
That’s a shame. Worse still, it was full of French people.
