this tweet has some merit

there is no doubt spanish teams , when compared to best in europe, are lacking physicality and speed, and the ability to get behind defences
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is so obvious though. Coupled with the defensive frailties showed by the big 2, it's a recipe for disaster. Setien's tactics were so stupid yesterday. You allow Bayern to play high up the pitch and press you senseless when you decide to play the old man Ramos up front on his own. They can be confident that you won't hurt them at all even with balls in behind. Frankly people have thrown up a fuss about getting rid of Arthur but I didn't rate him one bit. He exemplified exactly what's wrong with that Barca team.

with the gloating over barca's demise over....there is a big problem now with the standard of la liga clubs
our era of dominance in europe is well and truly over

Everything comes and goes in cycles peks. We've enjoyed the cycle of dominance of spanish football and now it's someone else's turn. With the resources and expectations of the big 2 though, I don't expect them to be out of the reckoning for too long. Madrid actually have a tonne of great young players and will bounce back sooner than later. Finding the replacement for Ramos will be the major issue in the coming years.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
yeah, i'm optimistic about Madrid's future...think we'll be back competing properly in the CL soon enough
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I give it 2 years max although with covid and the work on the stadium, it may be difficult to find the funds to get the finishing pieces of the puzzle. Need to put some trust in the likes of Odegard, Asensio, Valverde, Militao and the likes because they are all extremely talented players but at the moment lacking the mental fortitude to be carrying a team like Madrid. Modric played a blinder in the league after the lockdown but the City game showed it's about time he gets phased out of the team and his importance needs to reduce a little bit.

But Madrid, and I am not being political, will always be a force because they have the help of the government - in indirect ways, but it is there. It allows them to have star players who do not play regularly - Kaka, Morata, James, Higuain etc etc. Barça have had to sell and loan out players whilst Madrid have a very expensive squad on high wages.

So Madrid will always be there or thereabouts!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How is that any different from Barca? Barca have the biggest wage bill in football and have the most expensive squad. Not sure what the government has to do with that.

All those players were sold or loaned out.

Barca is going down the path of AC Milan, in waiting too long to replace ageing players.

Real Madrid 8-2 APOEL was the biggest aggregate win in the QF of the CL history. German Tiken-Taken matched that against Barca in a single tie

They’ve got eight players over 30 in the squad. With a couple more approaching that and Pjanic joining this summer.

Fack knows who they will appoint as next coach. Anyone worth their salt would avoid it like the plague, and wait until the elections to start a rebuild.

It doesn't look good for Barca. You'd hope they'll cop on now, but they've spanked loads already on buying expensive flops. God knows if they'll ever recover from this.

Unfortunately, this is the pure reality. And 5 of the players over 30 are on very high wages and difficult to move on.

Barca’s midfield is a joke. I’d fancy Fred and McTominay to put up more of a fight against Bayern’s midfield than Barca’s did.

Good thing they’ve got Pjanic coming in to add more strength and stamina to the midfield.

I'd say so too, Barca's midfield was non existent yesterday.

In fairness, this Bayern team look like they're on PED's, Admirable, to watch how sharp, and quickly they moved the ball around, their pressing was best I've seen this season, high energy levels they've shown is quite unbelievable.

I don't think any other team would've lived with them.

Bayern are the best team in Europe. But Barca’s flaws are perfect for them. You are not going to win the CL if most of your team can’t run.

Say what you like about United, Barca have made us look competent in recent years where squad building is concerned.

Though there’s clearly a mental fragility among many of these players. You don’t get hammered as often as they do if there’s not an issue there.

Imagine spending £42m on Ake to try and shore that defence up

I really don’t get this City team, they limit the opposition to like 3/4 effective attacks a game but usually concede - and they always create more than any team I’ve seen in the Prem but struggle to score. It is probably more of a personnel thing but it is really surprising

posted on 15/8/20

it's very difficult to defend well if you play a high line with not enough pressure on the ball when the opposition have it

you're just ripe for being taking to the cleaners on the counter
