Edin, are you trying to say it's become too tactical/detail-orientated these days?
Definitely. That City centurion team were as boring as a Mourinho team.
I think there's definitely more emphasis on structure and rehearsed patterns of play rather than players' improvisation/freedom to express themselves.
I don't know whether it'll be like this for the forseeable future or whether it's just a 'phase' that football is going through right now.
Right now though, unfortunately, this systems-based approach seems to be churning out the most efficient results.
Fack off were they.
I think what you’re saying is true, to an extent. But quite a few of those players were just ridiculous. They don’t come along that often.
There will always be peaks and troughs with football talent.
Look at cf right now, for example.

That’s a very bold opinion, they were very good to watch.
It’s a little OTT I think they were boring though. Pellegrini’s City are by far my fav
I think there is an issue sport has with professionalisation, increase in sports science etc makes it more and more boring and more and more robotic.
Basketball has kind of been ruined by 3s.
Rugby everyone’s athleticism is the only priority - a player like Danny Cipriani would have been a star but now you want your backs to basically just be slabs of meat.
Football all teams are more and more is athletic pressing machines. In a sport where Sissoko is more of an asset than a Winks or whatever you know it’s screwed up. Teams are now systems, it was way better when they were built around individuals.
Robotic is definitely the word I'd use. Players are being told what to do every second of the game, leaves very little room for genuine creativity.
I also don’t think there is a trough with football talent I just think the situation has changed. It’s tough to look as amazing like a Zola or MLT or whatever when every pro athlete can now run marathons, do PEDs and eat to a strict diet. As opposed to the alcoholic drinks that used to play.
The most talented players are picked by their physical stats/capability so heavily as well - it’s a talent just not a fun one. I don’t think there is room for a Cantona or Ginola or Berba really anymore.
I’m being OTT but the point stands.
I think the athleticism issue is true, more so than the pressing system that isn’t as prevalent as people make out.
That said, athleticism has always been a valuable attribute. The supremely talented players you cite can, and will, make it to the top still.
I’d also disagree that teams were always built around individuals and now they aren’t. Many teams still build round individuals and many in the past were very team oriented.
The major systemic problem, and one that is compounded by athleticism, is the death of the classic number 10 and 442.
Yup that’s huge as well.
5atb should be banned.
433 and 442 only.
Well 532/352 is the only formation that is often used where you might see a classic strike partnership.
Cant really think of a team using 532 for a sustained time?
Usually 523 or whatever the fack Arteta was trying. 703 I think
Darren you'd have thought N2 would've easily been able to work out what you meant by conservative tactics given how much he talks about them.
I should really say how much bolllocks he talks about them tbf.
Ole is weird as a tactician as most normal posters have alluded to. Really good at counter tactics but not the best otherwise. Your board is going to be hilarious when (if) Utd go on a bad run
Think there’s a few around Europe, Nazio and Inter just off the top of my head. I think Atalanta did a couple of years ago as well. Just saying in theory it’s the formation that will use a strike partnership. It’s more popular than 442 nowadays.
TRS, yeah I thought it was obvious. It annoys me that people think that playing sitting midfielders means the team is automatically conservative. Liverpool play three sitting midfielders ffs and have ten men in the opposition’s half.

Oh right thought you were meaning PL for some reasons. Yeah 532 is Conte’s preferred formation despite never really managing it with Chelsea
Edin, we’ve looked good at times/been successful with numerous different tactics under him. It’s why I don’t by the idea he’s tactically clueless, he’s not he’s just tactically conservative. That’s more of an annoyance, as we’ve shown we can play a more attacking style and have decent results/performances.
Because he had Hazard. It’s the only time he used 343 I think. Rube, Italy and Inter he’s used two strikers. Dunno about his other jobs.
Yup Tevez/Llorente and now Lukaku/Lautaro. Think Italy was Pelle and Casano??
It annoys me that people think that playing sitting midfielders means the team is automatically conservative.

Cause what else is there?
VC used to say it all the time and make out it was our biggest flaw ffs. Lately he's not mentioned 4-2-3-1 is a problem, funny that.
Nah was Eder and Pelle. Cassano was with Balotelli under Prandelli.
I can’t stand VC. Bloke’s a facking clueless priiiiiick.

'Interesting/bizarre bit of info ahead of PAOK v Olympiakos today...
So, the keeper of fellow Greek Super League side Aris (PAOK's city rivals), made a complaint after an alleged bribery approach before their match with PAOK in December.
PAOK denied it but then decided in a rage to put the keeper’s contract info and address on their website...
As a result the keeper received several death threats from PAOK fans and ultras and was placed under police protection.
He filed a lawsuit against PAOK which only became public yesterday. Coincidence that this news broke a day before this huge clash?
No chance, because the lawyer representing the Aris keeper is... The sister of Olympiakos’ general manager.'
