might as well have loaned martial for peresic if we arent going to play him

Spirit was fine but difference in full backs like night and day.

Darmien is not the guy to blame he's not that attacking type of player, thought he did well defensively, lingard doesn't offer much apart from that good old English work ethic, can get the odd goal but wingers need to bE beating men putting a great cross in or creating stuff, he does neither

United Kaz

Darmian does well defensively I don't disagree but he offers nothing going forwards. To play at fullback for a top 6 club you have to be better offensively as we have most of ball most weeks.

Darmian doesn't offer much going forward expect a few good crosses every once in a while. Lingard is good at moving the ball along and tracking back, something you need against a side like Real Madrid. He linked well with the midfield. The yellow card was a bit harsh as I think Isco or whoever dived on that challenge.

Valencia, as good as he was defensively, showed glimpse of attacking prowess but to me, he's still too one dimensioned to really make the right flank his own.

Well said OP, there is no balance in the team esp down the flanks.

Lukako's miss though!!

Rashford always misses a sitter in every game!

Lingard is like most English footballers these days.

We create athletes not footballers.

He can get up and down and sprint and run all day. But he's not very good at football.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't we buy darmien as rb but moved him lb when shaw fell apart and blind didn't look too good there? Another player shoe horned into a position which he never played before he gt to us, maybe he would look more comfortable going forward playing at rb? I mean how good would Valencia look bombing down the left?

Agree with the jist of the article but we weren't playing 433 tonight. We desperately need a left back that offers something going forward, especially with out wide options all preferring to come inside. Mkhi's problem isn't all positional as was seen today when he was playing in central areas. It's about the style and lack of movement.

We need to go back to Inter and tell them they can have Martial on loan and give them £30-35m for Perisic. If Jose doesn't fancy him then no matter how much our fans like him, he's pretty pointless being here.

We'd improve massively because we'd have a real winger and balance most importantly.

This Utd team is going to suffer the same issues of last season otherwise.

Darmian played as a LB for both Torino and Italy on a fair few occasions before we signed him.So he can play there its just what we expect from a fullback differs from his actual playing style, which is defensive.

Open goal missed by Rashford with 10 mins to go.
Reason why he's not a 9 for all to see. Darmian crap.
Played off the pitch for long periods so not good enough.

Save your tears for Sunday, if martial doesn't play

Not really a open goal when he's facing one of the best keepers in Europe.

I blame the manager

SE85,

As has been pointed out here and in the match thread, we played 3-5-2 tonight, not 4-3-3 (although we played something more like 4-3-3 once Rashford came on).

Lingard isn't going to pull up any tree playing at LWB, to be fair to the guy.

I agree with the jist of the article though.

We don't have a natural wide right attacker that is top quality - Lingard is an able squad option, and Mkhitaryan, who I don't rate much (unless playing more centrally) isn't a long term answer on the right either. Same for Mata.

On the left, Rashford still looks our most lively option - Martial is better when dribbling at players but his movement and work rate are so poor I can see why JM will favour Rashford.

We need a proper wide attacker of sufficient quality. Perisic would be welcome - Bale if fit even better.

If we played 352 in first half.....who was playing upfront with Lukaku? Certainly wasn't Miki. He was nowhere near him most of the half.

I thought it was 433 all game. Rashford just added a bit more urgency and pace but not a lot else changed, Madrid just tired.

posted on 8/8/17

I'm a bug fan of Mkhi but in hindsight we probably would have been better off going for Mane for our wide option last summer. Both wings aren't good enough going forward for a team that aspires to be at the top. Obviously the manager's tactics have something to do with that also. But the quality of players is still lacking in those wide areas compared to some of the very best teams.

posted on 8/8/17

It was Mkhi that was closest to Lukaku - but he spent a lot of it chasing back into midfield positions given that we barely had the ball for large parts of the first half.

The formation didn't work and I felt it helped Madrid. We saw that under LvG at times when he played the 3-5-2 - there's a risk of ending up with too many players stuck deep and unable to get out, and that happened again today.

I thought it was 433 all game
-----
Because Mkhi wasn't up near Lukaku you thought that?

Look where the defenders and Valencia and Lingard were positioned and it's clear as day we weren't playing a 433. Darmian was in line with Lindelof and Smalling. When pegged back Valencia and Lingard made it a back 5 at times.

Darmian played as a CB you saying? When has that ever happened?

Lingard was pinned back because they have great players who love to get forward.

Im not buying it was 352. We had 2 CB's on the pitch and Lukaku was isolated most of first half.

Darmian played LCB - just as he did in our win against Chelsea last season.

Christ, I can't believe people couldn;t even see what formation we were playing... It's not hard!

I didn't watch much of it but it was a 352 when I was watching (first half hour or so). The whole defensive line was shifted a bit to the left as Lingard was a bit further up compared to Valencia.

It did naturally move into 433 at times though so I get how some could think it.
