Everyone knew bbc would try to make out it wasn't hand ball. Pure agendas once again

It was a handball. What rankles with me more, and to be fair Lineker did address this with his sarcastic "are our referees perfect?" comment, is the overprotection or refs. It's created a culture where they feel that they are infallible and that's what I feel happened in the Spurs game.

I find it incredibly hard to believe that the VAR central hub accidentally sent the "no goal" message to the stadium, given that it actually was the correct decision. What I do believe is that the ref was told the goal should be disallowed and didn't want to admit he was erroneous in his original decision. And yet again, they've covered up for the ref and claimed it was an erroneous message posted on the big screen. Nonsense.

This league is being broadcast world wide and this nonsense is embarrassing and shameful. VAR isn't the problem, the implementation of it absolutely is. They've gone out of their way to protect refs, rather than try to get the right decision. Ironically, all that's happened is the refs' incompetence is coming even more under the microscope and we aren't getting very many more decisions right. It's ridiculous and entirely avoidable, should VAR be used in the PL like it is everywhere else that the technology is available. Where protecting incompetent and failing refs isn't the number one goal. They've created a monster.

Rant over

When you look at the Laporte handball costing City two points, then this goal for Alli today, you have to wonder what is the point in VAR?

Until they start making decisions for officials it's a waste of time.

The thing is, as harsh as the Laporte one was, it was a precedent, where it was claimed that any handball by an attacking player that contributed to a goal, would lead to said goal being ruled out. Fair enough, provided that's the benchmark and the standard and one that will be upheld.

And I think the guys in the VAR hub did apply that logic, hence the "no goal" decision flashing on the big screen. What happened after was the problem. The ref didn't want to change his decision and a bullshoooot reason was given for why the goal stood. It's so embarrassing.

Agree Merry, rules are rules but today was a mess.

I didn't even realise the PL has pitch side monitors like on the WC, apparently this hasn't been used by a single official yet.

Take the onus off people in the VAR room and have the refs make their own decisions if they don't have the balls to overrules them.

I was the exact same. I didn't realise the monitor facility existed in the PL. And agree, there's no point in VAR if it's only to tell us the refs are always right.

Having said that, I actually am in favour of it, if it's used as a tool to improve decision making, rather than just a tool to support refs, whether right or wrong.

I think it's kind of almost snobbish, where the PL seem to be self appointing themselves as the pinnacle of excellence and can't show any failure in refereeing, for fear of that self appointed halo slipping. Maybe I'm reading too much into it
