It's there to protect others and dirty old ones will still catch your droplets

I'm sure you've heard this before but would rather pretend otherwise
----------------------------------------------------------------------

How on earth does a sodden and filthy mask protect others for goodness sake?

There'll be a science behind that is there? Or will you just pretend there is?

Accusing government of Guantanamo like measures for a policy you dislike on asylum,

But perfectly happy to embrace and un-critically support the curtailment of the liberties of millions of citizens in the UK for 18 months.

No wonder centre-left politics is in a pit.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why do you think the HO want to have offshore asylum detention centres (believe will be in Africa) rather then processing applicants here as has been done historically?

It basically means applicants can be denied legal asylum protections, which follows new rules to make it harder (and in some cases impossible) for applicants to seek legal representation.

https://news.sky.com/story/covid-19-what-does-the-science-actually-say-about-face-masks-12349337
----------------------------------------------------------------------

yes, thanks for that.

I see it particularly addresses the continual use of the same face mask.

Which was of course my point but let's keep on pretending it wasn't.

And that of course also ignores the vast majority who don't even know how to wear one effectively.

There’s also the significant number of people in the vulnerable category that are going to be at much greater risk of infection, particularly given the current number of cases that is still rising.

Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good

It's quite obvious that if you're breathing out droplets containing the virus then having a mouth and nose covering will collect a lot of that and mitigate the spread

Which is why I find the removal of that mandate on public transport and in shops a bit mad tbh, it's great things are opening up and it's fantastic the link between cases and hospitalisation is broken but people who work in those places aren't being given a choice
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ah, now here I do agree with you.

I was quite shocked when public transport was not excluded, along with places like hair salons, hairdressers and the like where close face to face contact is quite likely and sustained.

There is however nothing to stop any establishment from keeping the rules in place should they wish. I think that might appeal to many customers too.

Is there much transport left in public hands?

Also sure I heard that the Tube could implement the rule if they wanted. They should

I don't feel people are considering how much of a boost it will be for global Britain if we manage to produce a Covid variant that smashes the Delta variant out of the park.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd imagine any one of practically every other country in the world have more chance of beating us to that accolade

So you think we are the lowest risk?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Of being the country that is the origin of some new deadly variant? Pretty much yes; we'll be well down the ladder.

Are you forgetting that the Delta variant and now this new Delta plus variant are believed to have started in India? And that these variants are in many countries around the world which include those with "closed" borders?

And that we have almost the highest level of vaccinated populace along with some of the longest and harshest restrictions?

🚨 | NEW: Priti Patel is pushing ahead with a crackdown on protests despite being told it could breach human rights. The bill makes it illegal to protest ‘noisily’ without a reasonable excuse, punishable by up to 10 years in prison

Via @DailyMirror

But freedom day? 🤔

This is Priti “I support the reintroduction of capital punishment” Patel we’re talking about.

Heading for 100k new cases per day.

The more new cases, the greater the likelihood of new variants.

Or I have I got that wrong too?

Ah, another scientific model. Brilliant.

Far more countries with more new cases that undertake far less testing, so yes I'd say there's more chance of any new variants springing up elsewhere.

Other than the Kent variant (may it rest in peace) all other variants of concern started outside the UK.

And Scotland with it's even harsher restrictions and more cautious approach has something like 7 out of the 10 worst rates of infection hotspots in Europe.

There might be a Hootsmon variant on the horizon
