I understand the point he's making in relation to brand new MPs, but it's not exactly the smartest thing to say, especially the timing giving UC uplift just ended.

I have no doubt it can be a challenge for a new MP, but I struggle to have much sympathy for someone on £82,000 a year when very large swathes of the population aren't even on half of that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Let's get this right:

Very large swathes of the population are members of *families* that don't bring in close to a *quarter* of that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The government’s department of work and pensions defines low pay as any family earning less than 60% of the national median pay. On this basis, there are more than 13 million people in the UK living in low-income households.

Uk median income - £31,461
13 million people earning less than - £18,887
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is the UK median income of £31k per capita or household?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Per person.

Low pay has also been defined in relation to the cost of living by the Minimum Income Standard Project. By their calculations, for a single person household anything less than £19,200 a year, before tax, counts as low pay.

Out of curiosity, do you know anyone personally earning less than £20k?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good, glad it’s per person and per person.

Don’t forget that there are 8m part time workers in the UK mate.

I would agree that £19k per capita (full time) is low pay in terms of brackets.

Lol? Probably early 20s so like £22k around that level yeah. But remember I am in London.

Thanks Hec, I had already been looking at that but scanning through loads of votes and clicking on the ‘read the debate’ link to ascertain which vote exactly is which is proving to be a bit of ballache.
I thought Tamwolf had it already as he posted about Sir Peter’s vote.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

As you Google skills aren't as high as your opinion of your own looks and status, here is an article which has the motion and the vote of each of the MPs.

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/universal-credit-search-how-your-24993802

The motion was: "This House calls on the Government to cancel its planned cut to Universal Credit and Working Tax Credit which from the end of September 2021 will reduce support for many hard-working families by £1,040 a year."

Boris ordered the Tory MPs to abstain. Peter Bottomley gladly went along with his parties wishes. Boris then ignored the vote as it was non-binding.

Now Peter Bottomley is moaning about it, despite abstaining from the vote to stop it happening and never tabling an amendment.

Yeah I'm in London too and work for a housing association (so a safe job) that, by quite a margin, the vast majority of full time staff are on around £19-25k.
London Weighting is a distant memory.

You like me, I assume, can agree that no one in London has a future to come anywhere close to matching their parents on those wages

The part time workforce has a large chunk of working parents who have to pay eye watering childcare costs.

We’ve had a very unwindy year.

Agree on nuclear, but I’m no expert.

I wouldn’t be anywhere near London on low wages like that unless it was my first year with a career path etc. If it were a permanent salary at those sorts of levels, I would leave London empty with rubbish piling up until they raised the wages and/or spread the jobs and wealth throughout the country more.

They’re starting to take some bits away from London but nowhere near enough. Still way too FS dependent and that’s all still London based sadly.

What is people's stance on foreign people coming into the UK for work and living?

I've just overheard an interesting discussion whilst at work about it all and I just wanted to know whether people view it as a good or bad thing.

Don’t let that influence your views on whether it is a good or bad thing though 😃

You're in the 36th percentile before you get to taxpayers who earn more than £20,500 before tax (ONS, 2019).

Yeah said half cause I meant per household in my head, but that stay is actually mental.

Knew it was bad, but didn't think it was that bad.

A lot of development is happening in Manchester and I can imagine within the next 5 years it will be regarded as the "second city" of England, behind London obviously.

The distribution of wealth between London and the rest of England is so ridiculously poor. For comparison, I've known someone who was living in Hammersmith for a year who had the opportunity to buy their one floor (of a 5 storey house) for £600k, just the floor. A flat in West Yorkshire (where I am based) would be somewhere in the region on £80-100k.
