Enjoy the new lecky Range Rover, and hope all goes well in a few weeks with the wee lady arriving.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It feels genuinely weird sitting behind the wheel of a nice car. I don’t know if it is the remanents of the catholic guilt even though I’m pottering around using the electric functionality full time being good to the environment, just feels like I shouldn’t be in a decent car.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Enjoy your car by all means, but let's not pretend it was good for the environment buying a new car.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Driving a hybrid/electric better for environment than driving a petrol car no? Guess it depends on lifecycle of the car and how long I intend to have it (plus impact of building a new one) versus maintaining high CO2 output old car.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think it has been shown that buying an old car is better for the environment than a new green car.

The first time I jumped in my first BMW (years ago) I had exactly that feeling, so much so, I felt it was inevitable it wouldn't last.
...I trashed it outside Warrington 10 months later!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've had my BMW for just over a year now and the first I got it, it felt absolutely amazing to drive compared to the Fiat Punto I owned previously.
I feel important driving a nice car.

If you can, test drive or get an M3....best car and driving experience ever.

You may recall back in Feb 2021 NI port authority and council staff were asked to stay at home as a result of a security threat. Staff were also stood down in the Dept of Agriculture amid concerns for staff safety.
"On the basis of information received today and, pending further discussions with the PSNI, Daera has decided in the interests of the wellbeing of staff to temporarily suspend physical inspections of products of animal origin at Larne and Belfast."
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-55895276
The PSNI in turn confirmed they were not aware of any security threats to port staff.
"The PSNI has no evidence of "credible threats" against port workers in Larne and Belfast, PSNI Chief Constable Simon Byrne has said."
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-55983873
BBC Spotlight has since found (was broadcast the other night here) the Mid and East Antrim Borough Council chief executive received an email from the DUP (following discussions) advising the department to withdraw staff from ports.
The the Department of Agriculture, (under DUP Minister Edwin Poots) subsequently withdrew health (SPS) inspectors. No other local parties were consulted/involved in this process aside from the DUP.
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-59480141
The PSNI are currently investigating and on the face of it, it looks like the DUP manufactured the security threat in an attempt to destabilise the NIP, and whip up further tensions amongst the community.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

PSNI confirmed there were no loyalist threats to customs "border" or port staff, no collecting car reg numbers etc and might explain why loyalists turned on dup in mid-east antrim and beyond over the last year?

I live 4 miles from Heathrow, where I work and if I were to opt for public transport to get there it would take roughly 90 mins with the traffic and two buses to get to work. In a car it's just so much easier. If I'm on a early shift I won't even be able to get there by public transport since the buses don't start until 5:30am

"I think it has been shown that buying an old car is better for the environment than a new green car."
By an absolute mile.
About 50% of the lifetime emissions associated with a vehicle run until it falls to pieces are in the raw material extraction and processing of those materials, manufacturing of parts, assembly of the vehicle, and shipping the end product to the customer.
The best thing you can do for the environment as a driver is to find an old banger nobody else wants to drive, look after it as best you can, and run it absolutely into the ground. Then repeat. The emissions the vehicle is creating are completely irrelevant at that point.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In the short term maybe, but I'm not sure that argument would hold up in the long term. This would rely on there being an infinite supply of 'old bangers' for everyone to buy. Which would likely mean the continued production of diesel engined cars to keep regenerating the used car market.
In the long term, a green future for cars in reliant on people buying new electric cars. Otherwise we just continue down the route we have been heading down.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And this is what I was going to say ^
Average lifespan of an ICE car is like 10-12 years, an electric (based on current battery degradation levels on used cars) should be good for at least 15, even before a battery.
Increasingly these cars are made of recycled material too, and the second hand car market is predicated on SOMEONE buying a car new first.
Therefore I think it's fair to say that, if you intend to buy an electric or plug in hybrid, by going new you are substantially better for the environment, because you also create a scenario in 5/6/10 years where a second hand car owner will also end up going electric as a result of your purchase.
If you buy a banger, it's likely the person who can no longer get that car, is going to buy something else, and on the chain goes until *Someone" buys a new car, which given the price differences is almost certain to be an ICE.
I suppose the shorter version would be:
X amount of new cars WILL be bought every year, or there won't be a 2nd hand market, therefore it's best that people who will buy electric cars are the ones buying new.

A green future for cars means having far, far fewer of them.
Less and shorter commuting, better public transport infrastructure and services, car sharing/renting, and more biking and walking.

That’d be a stronger argument if UK consumers, insurers and dealers weren’t scrapping perfectly decent (if ageing and in need of proper care) cars at an insane rate.
About a million cars are scrapped in the UK every year, and it is estimated that up to two-thirds are still or are close to roadworthy.
The scrap recycling rate in the UK is pretty decent, but versus continued use, emissions-wise, recycling metal isn’t ideal.
Recycling all these wind turbines could be a nice little niche industry maybe.

A green future for cars means having far, far fewer of them.
Less and shorter commuting, better public transport infrastructure and services, car sharing/renting, and more biking and walking.

Not walkable or bike-able?

Benji Shapiro at it again. He's found out how much Hasan Piker (ex Young Turks) makes on Twitch.
He thinks if this Piker dude doesn't give it all to socialist causes and lives in West Hollywood he should be castigated.
One thing he said that really had me laughing was his response to Piker saying "I made that money, I put in the hours."
Benji's response was "welcome to capitalism." WTF? Harvard educated and thinks you can only be a socialist if you live in poverty.
Saw it on a Kyle Kulinsky video on YouTube.

You could cycle that in 15 mins
----------------------------------------------------------------------
True. But it might rain, be too cold, be too hot, <insert excuse of the day>.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I cycle everywhere

Good man...you warm up quick cycling and great way to keep fit, save the planet and money and you get tantastic.
Saw you post about Dave on my old Black Dog Depression thread, and I cannot believe that was started over 4 years back.

Most right wingers don't understand socialism.
Which is how they like it, because they wouldn't be scared of it, if they understood it.

Am on it...think of the bush you could trim wi wan of they blades, boy.
Think you mentioned before, those wind turbine blades just get left in fields as we do not know what to do with them, and I think the E batteries provide problems with recycling them also....not good.

I understand it and accept it, alongside capitalism, using the best bits of both for the good of all.
It is the way forward....pragmatic rather than dogmatic.
Goes beyond banal left and right fights.
