BBC coverage of US politics is deeply unhinged - wouldn't touch Sopel's soapboxes with a bargepole.

The BBC is globally considered one of the most if not the most reliable, accurate, open news reporting bodies in the world today. That this Conservative government is attempting to dismantle the BBC because it does not like some of the scrutiny it receives and wishes to perpetuate a faux “culture” war is not only deeply disturbing it is downright unpatriotic.

Strictly Come Dancing is the most blue rinse Tory programme on TV

They will never get back in power if they get rid of that
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Why would it disappear? It's a commercial reality programme that could be made on literally any network - it's basically antithetical to the point of the BBC - should be on ITV, the true channel of old Tory crap.

It's not a faux culture war, and it's tiresome to see people dismiss the concerns of people with socially conservative opinions.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
it is the people with "socially conservative" opinions that r the danger
I wud descrbe myself as socially cnservatve but those folks r just racist psychos with very trubbling views.

they think the gvmint wanting too assist people (with the taxes we all pay) is communist 4 x-sample.
they think having discourse on the unfare treatment people of color get is "ruining America".

Considering social conservatives tend to be sceptical of much of free market wisdom, I would have to dismiss these claims as inaccurate.

As for 'discourse' on unfair treatment of so-called minorities, I just prefer not to credit erroneous claims regarding so-called social justice with any meaningful validity.

I was praising the guy who played the teen aged Tony Soprano. How he had all his little idiosyncrasies.
On the Scottish board where one poster told me... That would be understandable as the actor is Gandolfini's real son. Shudda red tha credits.

Socially conservative views are interesting, often they seem to come down to a group of people wanting to dictate how others live, in reference to things like marriage, sexuality etc. The evangelicals are a great example of this in the US against divorce, abortion, adultery, homosexualty but chose as their representative Donald Trump? a man who cheated on his wife.

Also things like treatment of prisoners often they call to "get tough" on crime and the causes but then don't agree with say providing people with decent educations, a welfare system that will help people, crime is often a result of poor education, poverty and mental health issues but do they support increasing assistance to these groups?

"Socially conservative views are interesting, often they seem to come down to a group of people wanting to dictate how others live"

The same critique could be made of social progressives, so-called liberals, centrists, libertarians, fascists - it is too vague to apply to social conservatives collectively.

"in reference to things like marriage, sexuality etc. The evangelicals are a great example of this in the US against divorce, abortion, adultery, homosexualty but chose as their representative Donald Trump? a man who cheated on his wife."

I think comparable critique would be made of so-called 'transgender rights' advanced by progressives, or BLM, or rewriting school curriculums, or remodelling institutions like the legal system to push their own agendas....

Also the UK and US are not the same so comparing socially conservative views from the US evangelical movement (no comparable British tradition) to say, Brexit voters, seems forced to me. Though I'd agree that their wider support for Trump always seemed foolish.

"Also things like treatment of prisoners often they call to "get tough" on crime and the causes but then don't agree with say providing people with decent educations, a welfare system that will help people, crime is often a result of poor education, poverty and mental health issues but do they support increasing assistance to these groups?"

It is because a lot of social conservatives fundamentally reject your analysis. I want laws enforced proportionately in line with agreed terms, by a proactive police force that deters crime through patrolling streets with a local police station, in line with Peel's principles of policing. I don't want paramilitary social workers dressed like Robocop wheeling around in their siren-blaring Vauxhall astras pretending to understand criminal behaviour as a social cause.

In particular, I think the argument the welfare state has anything to do with crime is both patronising towards poorer people and doesn't stack up to empirical evidence.

Education and attainment declining is more to do with a drop in standards and our own relativist indulgences than money.

The BBC News channel is like a party political broadcast for the Labour party these days but of course you can always turn over and watch Kay Burley and Beth Rigby savaging the Tories (rank hypocrisy) but not mentioning Starmers cosy drinks soiree.

GB News are starting to get their $hit together and when I find the others intolerable more and more I'm finding they provide a better balanced approach .They are the only channel that I've heard suggest that we get the general idea with partygate and it might be time to get back to proper news rather than pandering to Cummings vendetta.

I’m not sure I agree. One example; Americast. Far more informed, balanced, rationale perspective on politics in the US than any other radio or TV news broadcast production. It continues to be trusted and relied upon across the globe as an unbiased source of news and information,,
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well you are comparing to the batsheite crazy country there. 😂

Anecdotal but when I was speaking to colleagues a while back asking if their country was safe atm, they said "Stop watching the BBC, it's fine."
----------------------------------------------------------------------
😂😂 true when you compare it to the likes of CNN or Fox it is so refreshingly unbiased on a global stage. Around the world the BBC world service is still the go to for news on what is happening. For what is happening around the world the BBC Newshour podcast is so much better than any other news source I have found,

I will say I think they get it wrong sometimes in terms of mixing up balance and impartiality (see for example their brexit coverage or some of the anti-vax or anti-lockdown folk they’ve had on) but on the whole for what it provides I think it is absolutely savage value.

On your anecdote, what country was it if I could ask?

Again I’ll say, the tories seem to dislike or disrespect the things that Britain are recognised globally for; be it the NHS, the queen or the beeb. And with the first and last of those it appears purely ideological as part of their divide and conquer culture war.

No, advocating so-called rights based on unsettled scientific claims at the expense of long-established rights and norms is actually worse.

2) No one sensible thinks people envy the NHS mate, it is not the 'envy of the world' - it is one of the low performing healthcare services in Europe for patient outcomes, and no it's not because it underfunded, that gasping monolith is a bottomless pit for our tax money
3) The Queen - bizarre, I think the Left criticise her and the monarchy more than conservatives do.
4) The BBC - because it is rubbish and no longer fulfils it remit
5) 'Culture war' - criticising and wanting to reform left-wing institutions is a perfectly reasonable conservative ambition and should have been done years ago.
