The BBC is globally considered one of the most if not the most reliable, accurate, open news reporting bodies in the world today. That this Conservative government is attempting to dismantle the BBC because it does not like some of the scrutiny it receives and wishes to perpetuate a faux “culture” war is not only deeply disturbing it is downright unpatriotic.

"Socially conservative views are interesting, often they seem to come down to a group of people wanting to dictate how others live"

The same critique could be made of social progressives, so-called liberals, centrists, libertarians, fascists - it is too vague to apply to social conservatives collectively.

"in reference to things like marriage, sexuality etc. The evangelicals are a great example of this in the US against divorce, abortion, adultery, homosexualty but chose as their representative Donald Trump? a man who cheated on his wife."

I think comparable critique would be made of so-called 'transgender rights' advanced by progressives, or BLM, or rewriting school curriculums, or remodelling institutions like the legal system to push their own agendas....

Also the UK and US are not the same so comparing socially conservative views from the US evangelical movement (no comparable British tradition) to say, Brexit voters, seems forced to me. Though I'd agree that their wider support for Trump always seemed foolish.

"Also things like treatment of prisoners often they call to "get tough" on crime and the causes but then don't agree with say providing people with decent educations, a welfare system that will help people, crime is often a result of poor education, poverty and mental health issues but do they support increasing assistance to these groups?"

It is because a lot of social conservatives fundamentally reject your analysis. I want laws enforced proportionately in line with agreed terms, by a proactive police force that deters crime through patrolling streets with a local police station, in line with Peel's principles of policing. I don't want paramilitary social workers dressed like Robocop wheeling around in their siren-blaring Vauxhall astras pretending to understand criminal behaviour as a social cause.

In particular, I think the argument the welfare state has anything to do with crime is both patronising towards poorer people and doesn't stack up to empirical evidence.

Education and attainment declining is more to do with a drop in standards and our own relativist indulgences than money.

Oh so many!! I think already 5 today, including catching some explosive 💩 in the beard for the first time!

The wee one has a habit now too of, whenever I’m reading to her, of fixing her gaze directly on me, going deadly still, then dropping a massive 💩 in her nappy 😂 I respect the dominance to be fair.

SatNav, have you read about the new potential 'drug' that may stop you from getting Covid?
Interesting.
Weed.
Its from some study done in Oregon. Surprise. West coast growers I'm sure paid for the study.

But I'm taking my own research on it. I haven't had Covid yet, so it must work.
I'm sure its cheaper than monoclonal antibodies the likes of Joe Rogan can afford.

Breaking: Amazon may be coming to an arrangement with Visa in the UK -meaning the online retail giant might still accept payment from UK issued Visa cards. Amazon had suggested it was going to stop accepting UK issued Visa payments after Jan 19th 2022. More to come. https://t.co/HMIk7ahG55

Not too surprising really

Wasn’t it just visa credit cards? I thought debit ones were excluded.

So essentially a huge online company who does its utmost to pay as little tax as possible has managed to force another albeit lesser online company who does pay its taxes in the U.K. to drop its fees, thereby ensuring it makes even more money upon which it will likely avoid tax in the U.K.?

That about it?

posted on 17/1/22

No there's also the fact that when we were in the EU Visa were not able to impose those charges

A giant like Amazon will have been able to strongarm VISA but smaller retailers won't

So they have managed to force Visa to drop their fees then.

Ok.
