Is the nintendo switch worth buying

Value for money, No. Xbox-X is probably value for money considerong its specs.

Is it worth buying, totally Yes if you grew up loving Nintendo games.
Mario Kart 8 deluxe is nostalgic buy also progressive. Nostalgic

I'd argue the opposite, sorry Jedi, as both the PS4 Pro and XBox One X are mid-gen consoles, with lifecycles of 3 or so years.

The Switch (most Nintendo consoles, really) do not rely on their specs in order to propagate interest and sales.

I'm a PS fan through and through, however, I'm going to pick up a Switch because, as Jedi correctly mentions, their games are iconic and completely unique (and most importantly - exclusive).

Really, the only games I care about playing on the switch are Mario/Mario Kart, Zelda, & Pokemon (eventually), but I think they are worth it just for that.

Also, Nintendos seem to be the most universal, in that you can play co-op with just about anybody that comes around to visit.

I think I'm changing my argument slightly though (and sorry for waffling): I would 100% get a switch if you have either a PS4/PS4 Pro or an Xbox One/Xbox One X.

I think it's a great supplementary console, but I'd always want something with better specs and a more diverse array of games as my core console.

Valid points rooney. I suppose the longevity of the Nintendo will probably work put cheaper in the long run.
But as you said, 3yrs is a long time in gaming.

The games are iconic. I spent most of my 3yrs at uni playing 4 player Goldeneye and Mario Kart. The rules were simple. You had to have 5 shots of vodka and a few tinnys before playing. Great times!

Im waiting for the switch version of Donkey Kong as well

Agree with Rooney

As a supplementary console - well worth it. I also use it in portable mode more than it having it docked into my TV (Well worth it when the other half is watching her soaps and Im wanting to do something other than watch that tosh). Its not all rosy however and there is a few things worth noting.

DO NOT buy the console that comes with a packaged game that comes with a download code, it is better to buy the console and game separate.

I bought a switch and Mario Odessy separate for a good £10.00 less that the boxed product. I was also happy to do that as I wasn't clogging up the Switch HDD with a game (It only has 32GB of storage and there is no External HDD support as of yet that I know of)

Theres also the price of the extra peripherals to take in mind. The Joycons are good for most people but I have freakishly large hands (I blame my Barnsley genes) and while the Joycons are good in tablet/potrtable mode I find they can be rather annoying and fiddly when playing on the TV. I have bought the Pro controller but that is another cost to add.

Another exclusive game worth mentioning is Splatoon 2.

yes and no for me....... I want one and will no doubt end up buying one. But for me there is no rush, as you said the switch isnt about specs as much. However I do think at the moment it very overpriced especially with the lack of content IMO. I will wait til around Summer next year i think. The factories @ Nintendo are still struggling to keep up with demand and for that reason the price hasnt dropped. I will wait as there is no rush.

I have just come back from Japan (gamers/geek's paradise - go there!) and it really has gotten me back onto the gaming hype.

Switches/Nintendo in general are sold out everywhere over there and it made me really consider buying a 3DS for Pokemon (because I absolutely hate flying and you can't even have your phone on in flight mode on Air China to play games/listen to music!!) but, having read a few articles, I understand the next Pokemon RPG is going to be for Switch as opposed to 3DS as they truly feel they have now "maxed it out" with Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon.

That was the deal breaker for me.

I understand the Xbox One X argument, as it's clearly the only console that can provide 'proper' 4K gaming atm, but I've read a few articles that suggest the PS5/Next Box will be out as soon as 2019.

Obviously could be BS but I think those two will be around twice as powerful and hopefully provide immersive VR experience (maybe even loose 8K gaming!), and I'd hate to get into the mobile phone cycle of a new one each year with consoles!

May be worth waiting, as a few have said, as there aren't that many games out currently, but with your Marios, Zelda, Xenoblade, there'll be enough to keep my mind happy whenever I get away from my desk!

Might be worth it just to take Jedi up on his drinking game

my mate has the switch and you would think that with Mario, Zelda, Skyrim and Xenoblade there would be plenty to get through. However you dont reailse how many hours you get through on it in your spare time. He uses it whilst commuting to and from work, whilst his mrs watches crap on tv and when lying in bed. The hours add up fast and before you know you have hammered a game ! said you can easily blast through about 4 hours a day without really realising it. that could then end up being about anything of 20-40 hours a week. After a month you have pretty much done your collection !

I've got a one x and a switch, I'm a sucker for Zelda and Mario though, I don't think some of Nintendos games have ever been betttered than those. I do that with the realisation it has a short shelf life though (aside from Mario Kart, although I still play the n64 version!)

Yes I'd say its worth buying. I bought it on launch day and its still the only console I play. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was released today which looks like a very good JRPG. Then you have games like Zelda and Mario, both critical acclaimed as the best of their genres. Fun games like Mario Kart and Splatoon and some great remakes too. Its a great console and the fact that you can take it on the go makes it even better.

I've considered buying one, just for the Mario games/Mario Kart and Zelda. I won't really get much use out of it on the go, so it would just be for casual fun at home or with friends/family. Would be nice to have it over the Christmas break from work, but I was planning on waiting for a price drop.

Prices aint gonna drop any time soon it seems. Its still selling out world wide, the demand in Japan is huge for them also. I cant see any price drop til nearly Summer

What's the best price at the moment, Amazon?

To begin with I would want the console, Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart, Zelda.

Not fussed about the different coloured controllers in red/blue if that makes a difference.

You can get a bundle for about £320 I think with one of the above games from Amazon, Game etc.

Thing is, Nintendo's first party games very rarely drop in price, even after a few years they remain the same as they were when released. Pre-owned ones still cost about the same as brand new.

"bundle" hate how they try to pass off new consoles with 1 or 2 games as a "bundle" I mind the days when I got the ps1 bundle. Came with 7 games !!

£320 lowest price with 1 game is still overpriced for me, thats over a hundred quid more than you can get a ps4/xbox for. The price will need to come down to around £200 for me to get it. By then there will be a decent catalouge for me cos as things stand there is only 4/5 games tops i would wanna play on it so far and I would be done with them before christmas with the exception of Mario Kart.

posted on 11/12/17

I've had one since release and I haven't touched any of my other consoles since (that will change when I get VR for Christmas)

It has a frankly amazing lineup already, BOTW even before the two big DLCs is an easy 100hr + game, Mario odyssey is better than Mario 64 (my opinion) xenoblade 2 is a fantastic action jrpg.

I don't have Mario kart, as I have it on the wii u, but it's a pretty definitive version of Mario kart (wii u version) if you haven't played it yet, or are looking to rediscover ot (I have the 360 and ps4 versions also) the skyrim switch version is very very good, la noire was well worth the £25 I dropped on it, splatoon is a fantastically fun shooter, headed for E- game status.

On top of that there are MANY MANY amazing indie games that you do need to consider to get the absolute best value from the switch. Shovel knight is great fun and an awesome throwback to nes / mega drive Era gaming.

On top of that they have a good lineup for the next year, possibly including a Pokémon game, which if they take back to the first Gen, but 3d I would probably play for the nostalgia.

Finally, the wii u was a highly underrated console, and some of the best games from it will be making their way on to the switch in the future, which will be interesting to see how they handle the lack of a second screen, but Nintendo did a press release saying at some point there will be backward compatability with previous controllers, which could reference the wii u game pad while in docked mode.

This would also then allow virtual console of ds/3ds/new 3ds games for the first time, opening up an absolutely enormous back catalogue of Nintendo games.

Honestly the best value for money console I bought, considering the ps4 I bought for £400 bundled with fallout 4, it's nowhere near the console the switch is turning out to be.

I'm docked mode the graphics are great on my 4k TV, helped of course by Nintendo artstyle, but even skyrim looks great. And then of course, as others have mentioned, it goes with me on a commute, which the Playstation cannot

For £280 I paid on release its been amazingly worthwhile and as Sony recently admitted, it's a console phenomenon that cannot be ignored!

I'm not bothered about the indie games, I literally only want Mario Kart (not had one since N64), Mario Odyssey, and Zelda.

Will probably never (or very very rarely) use it in portable mode either.

It should be cheaper if you promise to only play 3 games

posted on 14/12/17

I'd say I've spent 80% of my playtime in docked mode, to be honest when I bought it I was sure I'd never use it as a portable device, but the seamless switch between the two modes does actually make it usable

It would be a shame if you dismiss Indie games so easily, many indie studios have big budgets these days and push out some awesome games, some of them better than the rubbish big studios keep pushing out.

Also, bear in mind that they have merged console and portable divisions meaning there will likely be multiple Zelda / Mario's games released for the switch, as well as it's own version of Mario kart at some point.

Plenty of other notable titles coming too. And if the release schedule for '18 looks sparse, just remember Nintendo have started announcing games much much closer to release, even with as little as two months notice.

You will find no shortage of games to compliment your more dedicated platform of choice.

Enjoy odyssey and Botw, well worth being contenders for 1+2 spots for GOTY

Ok so i bit the bullet...
Bought the switch and its been a pleasure to play ...

Legend of zelda b.o.t.w is just so stunning to play ....its tricky and the controls to control link are taking me a while to get used too but visually its 10/10....

Mario kart online is brilliant ...

But mario odyssey is a bit meh

I'm considering buying "the kids" a Switch soon. Already have a Wii U which was criminally underrated IMO, any recommended games?
