I don't know why this isn't more highly rates by critics. To put my 'to view' list together I went through a few 'best of' compilation lists, and none had gladiator particularly high.

But to me if I think of a great movie (of any decade), it's the first one that comes to mind. Tough to watch in parts (and I'll probably skip past those sections this time !!), but overall I think of it as a masterpiece.

I watched it a few nights ago and it’s aged very well, and Phoenix as always was phenomenal

It really is a masterpiece!

It's pure cheese. Fields and apparitions? Do me a favour! Dodgy directing from Ridley, especially the tiger scene. Just throw the camera about why don't ya.

The brief of it is a cliche of action movies.
(Read in an 80's trailer voice)

He was admired by all that knew him.
He was the son the King never had.
It was his time to go home...but he was about to be betrayed in the greatest way imaginable..

This
