Well in my case since 1952, before the PL was a gleam in Sky's eye.
The Munich tragedy ( there's an article about the crash and the survivors in todays Guardian ) did create a wave of sympathy around the country, but we were a very well supported club before that, and regularly filled our ground of around 45000 people.
But to go back before anyone was born, indeed over 100 years ago, to try and make a point points to desperation.
It's true we had lucky breaks with the managers we've had, you had yours with your owner, so why the criticism of our money. We earned it, did you ?

And most United fans know about their history, Conte. It's not like we're claiming to be paupers, are we.

Good find Brummie. Most Utd fans on this site think football existed from 1992 which coincides with their domination of English football
-------------------------

Common misconception. United did finish 2nd the year before the PL came into existence, and had what was widely considered to be the best squad in England. The PL coincided with United's success, rather than the other way round. In fact, it's the equitable sharing of prize money and TV money that helps the rest to keep up. If it were just left to marketing appeal of the clubs, that would put United in a pretty dominant position.

Just saying

manusince52, don’t get me wrong, I don’t begrudge Utd anything and as I’ve previously stated, far from being an ABU. I also respect fans such as yourself who have supported them long before the modern day success story.

What I do find tedious is the modern United fan who would have us believe that their club is borne out of some divine intervention and exist on a superior plane than the rest of us.

Whilst, it’s widely acknowledged that the tragedy of 58 was the catalyst for the present day global magnitude of Manchester United I also acknowledge that they could command crowds of the size you state.

However, the lack of ignorance about the history of Chelsea, if you read some posts on forums such as 606, is more than evident. During the 20s, 30s, 40s 50s and 60s crowds in the 60 and 70,000+ region were common at Stamford Bridge and as I’m sure you’re well aware, the 2nd highest ever English league attendance is held by Chelsea at over 82,000. We even used to get crowds of up to 55,000 in Division 2 during the 70s – I’ve stood in them more than once.

To go back over 100 years is certainly not borne out of desperation but in fact very relevant if you want to get into this sort of debate, as whether some like it or not without that influx of cash in 1902, Manchester United simply put would probably not exist today in any formation. Did United earn that money? Did Chelsea earn theirs?

The point is, it’s irrelevant, these events have happened and part our clubs DNA.

Those that want to talk about Chelsea and history cannot dismiss our history, pre-Roman, without accepting the helping hand they’ve had in their past that gave them the club they have today, well not if they want to be treated with any credibility.

I quite agree about Chelsea.i wrote a bit the other day about going to the Bridge with Rex Harrison and Rachel Roberts alongside. You had some great players then, Osgood, Hutchinson, Charlie Cook,it felt glamorous to me. We had George though, and he was better. It was always one of my favourite away trips. That and Black country games,Stoke and Wolves where they have a mordant sense of humour.
Of course we went to Carnaby Street,Kings Road,The Chelsea Potter, just because they were famous.

The Chelsea Potter was a bit up market for me, I often used to frequent The Chelsea Drugstore - always an admirer of classic dancing!

52,

Regarding George Best, was there ever a feeling in Manchester that he might sign for Chelsea?

I was a bit young at the time but I was aware later on that he used to enjoy partying up the Kings Road with some of the Chelsea lads of the time and he did have his photo taken in a Chelsea strip with Ossie and Alan Hudson. Not sure if that was some sort of testimonial though!
