The rainbow laces were a specific campaign backed by the FA to try and eliminate discrimination in football. It’s a stated part of their agenda/strategy and specifically about attitudes within the game. Given it’s focused on football I’m not sure it’s the same thing as an overtly political symbol.
The poppy stance is an interesting comparison though because there isn’t a huge difference there. Personally I was in favour of the poppy and have no problem with Pep wearing the ribbon. I can understand the FA’s position though, if you allow it then there would be all sorts of campaigns/agenda being represented before too long.
They were clearly reluctant to charge him given it’s taken 3 months!
