“Why have Wednesday got into this trouble?
I’m sure the reasons are many and varied, and some fault lies at the feet of the EFL’s financial model for the Championship, but the over-riding reason is they have ignored basic business principles and spent much more than they are earning in turnover income.
Sheffield Wednesday’s income for last season was £23.3 million yet they spent £37.5 million on club operating expenses of which almost £30 million was on wages alone.
They then spent another £11.5 million buying new players.”

And yet we’ve gone 7m over in wages less than 6 months in AR’s first full season.

Not correct Jonty. AR said the wage bill has risen by £7m not that it is £7m over budget.

I doubt it’s all on players anyway. Some will be replacing staff MC sacked and some in building the scouting network.

I’m sure the accounts will answer your questions.

Stoopo, you’re like a broken record. You apologise for every 5h it owner we’ve had. You gushed over GFH, dawned over Massimo abd now despite the red flags are doing the same with AR. It’s like you have your fingers in your ears going later la la every time and every time you end up with egg in your face.

Our wage bill was around 18 mill. If it’s gone up 8 mill I just don’t see how you can defend that in light of the article you posted, but you have somehow found a way.

As the parachute payment is £35m in the first two seasons after relegation, it looks very difficult for other clubs to compete without falling foul of FFP rules. You either overspend and gamble on getting promoted or you rely on exceptional management and modest spend.

Jonty, careful.
He’s allowed to have his fingers in his ears if he wants.
He can defend if he wants.
His opinions.
No need to chastise

"To put it simply we can say we have spent arounf £19/20 million on player transfers. Obviously we didn't get all the money for Chris Wood but it will be paid by Burnley over three years. We've increased the salary wage by about £8 million from last year so I think if you make the calculations we've spent much more than what we got for those players."

from 2016 accounts statement:

Our accounts statement for 2016 say
"First Team playing wages represented 50% of turnover compared to 71% during the prior financial year"

Wednesday's 2017 shows they spent nearly 129% of their turnover on wages.

We are nowhere near their excesses unless something's gone badly wrong with the club.

43, wages to turnover was 18 mill compared to 30 mill.

Wages are more than just first team squad.

On the other side of this.

I can identify at least three players I’d be happy to go for on the cheap, if they are desperate to sell

The bulk of the wages will be the first team squad and upper management. Can't see having lots of u23 players making too much impact on the overall wage bill compared to say a first team player on £15k per week.

Will be interesting to see the 2017 accounts re. wage bills, but still can't see us being anywhere near the likes of Sheff Weds - until I see otherwise, I think we're in safe financial waters.

I would ultimately like to see 'quality' over 'quantity' with regards to the first team squad, but our wage cap must make that difficult. I'd still rather try to do it on a sensible financial footing though.

The pain of dealing with going into administration, golden tickets, dodgy offshore ownership and all those chancers without any money trying to get hold of the club is too fresh in my mind to wish for anything else.

It's Ironic as in our case this would be the longest quick fix in history! - nearly 15 years and counting.

Regardless of which players have caused this, we have financial sustainability rammed down our throats by AR and AK, rightly so in my opinion, but then they spend loads in Jan, say the moneys gone and wages up 50% or so and players are going to have to leave.

Yes not Weds, but we're not seeing actions matching the words and that is the concern.

I don’t think it’s a concern

Who’s top of league and how long have the owners been there

If you all remember rightly there was a time when we were running at wages less than 50% of turnover, the lowest in the Football League. It was widely agreed that 70% is a good and sustainable number.

So if wages have actually gone up by 50% we need to remember we actually weren't spending anywhere near enough in the first place to challenge.

All down to recruitment, ARs vision will sink or swim with it

I’m a broken record? FFS you are the epitome of broken friggin records.

Do you ever look at yourself and wonder why you are so negative about every owner we’ve ever had?

AR knows the wage bill is up and has said it needs adjusting in the summer. He sanctioned it. It’s his responsibility.

But Jonty knows best.

To be fair, he was fully justified with the previous 3!

I’m only negative about the crooks, whilst you fall over yourself to make excuses for their lies, you do it every time.

AXA for season 2015-2016 wages were 60% 18 mill of 30mill revenue.

Did wages go up last year replacing Steve Evans with monks team bringing in green (free so wages higher), Pablo Jansson bartley ayling grimes Roofe o’kane etc I think it’s fair to think they did abd now theyre up another 8 mill.

Woukd think revenues up as well but wages up quicker.
